I have over thirteen years of experience in the field of education. I am certified in Middle School and High School Language Arts and English. I also have a Masters Degree in school counseling and am a career counselor. I have worked in a variety of school settings including alternative learning environments for special needs students and students who have been expelled or suspended from school. I currently teach GED students in a variety of subject areas, as well as working with those who need to enhance study skills, motivation and have issues with school avoidance/anxiety. My past experience also includes teaching and job coaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and those with other disabilities.
In addition to tutoring English, I can work with anyone who needs help finding motivation, enhancing life skills and in need of career counseling. I have worked as a college career counselor and am able to perform and evaluate interest inventories and am familiar with the college application and financial aid processes. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked as a college Career Advisor for several years. As a Career Advisor, I became familiar with many different career inventories, which I am able to give and interpret. I can also work with individuals in need of assistance with college selection and motivation.
I worked as a college counselor for seven years. I counseled students in class selection, study skills and career selection. I also taught Career Development at the college level.
I currently teach GED Reading, Writing/Grammar, Science and Social Studies and can help with the basics of the math section. I have access to study materials for the GED test and am very familiar with the GED testing process (sign up, testing site and grading).
I have taken many Sign Language classes and worked with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students as a Life Skills Teacher and Job Coach. I can communicate in ASL and understand Deaf culture.
I have worked with many different special needs students teaching life skills, job skills and reading. I have experience working with students who have Down's Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, Autism, physical and learning disabilities.
I currently work with students in need of gaining motivation to attend school and achieve educational goals. I work closely with students who suffer from school anxiety and school avoidance and are often truant as a result. I am a certified school counselor and career counselor, as well as in teaching middle school and high school students.
