Well, this is me ... I am an African-American female, a second year graduate student at GSU - currently pursuing my Master's in Education Administration, I received my Associate's in Arts degree from Joliet Junior College and my BA in English from GSU. I am an educator, like many other women and men in my family, and most of all, I am a mother. I love being a mom. My daughter, Brooklynn, is 4 years old and she is absolutely my world. I admire her wonder and her amazement at some of the simplest things in the world, things that we adults take for granted. On my teaching philosophy, I wrote that I love to hear students ask the question WHY. My daughter is at that stage, where everything is a question of why? My daughter is my inspiration and I thank God everyday that I have her.

Since as long as I can remember, I have always seen myself as the type of person that helps people in anyway I can, which is why I chose the field of education.

Failure was not an option when I was growing up and therefore in the classroom, I carry those same family values and give my students every opportunity to succeed and become what they want. I have taken over 40 education related courses at GSU and from all of them, I have learned that teaching is an art and that a child's mind is the canvas and I am the one holding the paint and the brush!

In Standards for the English Language Arts, the National Council of Teachers of English and the College Readiness Standards, students should be “knowledgeable and proficient users of language so that they may succeed in school, participate in our democracy as informed citizens, find challenging and rewarding work, appreciate and contribute to our culture, and pursue their own goals and interests as independent learners throughout their lives.” As a teacher, I have developed aspirations as to what a quality teacher has to be. This includes: inspire and encouraging students, promoting continuing education, influencing creativity in students, promote critical thinking, and most of all treating my students as individuals and getting to know them as such. A teacher’s job is to illuminate and inspire a student into thinking and knowing that they can be anything and everything that they want to be, no matter who they are and where they might come from. Along with the responsibility of the teacher, comes the initiative of the student. Competency in subject area, cooperative and active learning, exploration, and self-expression leads to a student that is willing to learn and ready to face challenges in the classroom. I will assess student understanding by the use of projects, oral exams, research papers, tests, presentations, speeches, and group/individual assessments. A teacher is the one who educates and inspires her students to educate themselves, to build themselves up and to open their minds to a world of possibility.
