Illinois State University (Elementary Education)
Governors State University (Master's)
Hi My name is Kathie F., and I am excited to have the opportunity to be your tutor. I have a bachelor's degree from Illinois State University in Elementary Education (1997), and also a masters degree in Educational Administration from Governors State University (2003). I have taught 5th grade for 10 years in the New Lenox School District 122 (1998-2008), and have loved every day. I am currently taking a few years off from working full time, as I have three young children that I am staying home to take care of. My oldest is 10, and is in fourth grade, so I am seeing school through the eyes of a parent, which is a new perspective that I believe will make me a better teacher when I return full time.
I have tutored independently during all 10 of my teaching years. My tutoring experience ranges from group tutoring, study skills instruction, and one on one tutoring. I have always enjoyed the opportunity to tutor to reinforce skills, improve achievement, or extend the learning experience beyond the classroom. Along with being a classroom teacher, I was also very involved in the school though sponsoring student activities, coaching, Team Leader responsibilities as a staff member, member of the School Improvement Team, District Improvement Team, various curriculum committees, and recipient of the districts "Those who Make a Difference" award.
As a teacher, I am interested in making connections with my students. One of the best compliments I would receive was "Mrs. F, you always make it easy to learn what we're doing". I would differentiate lessons to meet the needs of many students, and understand that all students learn differently. There is no cookie cutter way to teach, and actually, through differentiation, I was able to be creative in my lessons and to meet students needs. In my teaching career, I have been lucky enough to team teach resource classes, which included students in special education and also Gifted and Talented Math and Language Arts classes.
I value each student as an individual and am excited each year to see what abilities a student will have to offer. I have found that over the years, it is not just what I teach to my students that makes a difference, it's what they teach to me as well. I think the best thing a teacher can do is help to provide the tools for all children to discover and value their own abilities, and watch them prosper. My favorite moments as a teacher have been those "light bulb" moments, when you can see that a connection has been made, and a child is excited about what they have accomplished.
I am very proud to be a teacher, and I do my best to make learning relevant, and fun. I welcome the opportunity to work with you as a tutor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a fifth grade teacher for ten years, I have had an opportunity to teach many subjects. Earlier in my teaching career, I taught all subjects, which included: spelling, vocabulary, reading, writing, grammar, math, science, social studies, health, study skills, and character development. More recently, the school district I worked for departmentalized and I exclusively taught Language Arts (reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, spelling) and Social Studies. I have worked with every grade level, from 1-8 in some capacity, whether as a classroom teacher, tutor, substitute teacher, or buddy class. My key age group would obviously be grades 4-6, as I taught 5th grade, but am comfortable and confident to tutor grades 1-6.
As a teacher, I have taught gifted instruction for 6+ years, either in Math or Language Arts. I have also acquired gifted education certification. I was a team teacher for 4 years, as well. This opportunity allowed me to work with our special education teacher, and learn various strategies to adapt instruction to meet the needs of diverse student abilities in math. I have been trained as a writing specialist through our district, and have been on numerous curriculum committees. Most recently I have privately tutored students in math and Language Arts, with a focus on phonics, word attack skills, and syllabication. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have concerning my experience and credentials.
