About Lucia

Bio

My many years tutoring and teaching physics have shown me each student finds different aspects challenging. For some it's the math; for many more it's the concepts. I can help students develop approaches that help them grasp the concepts and organize the work so any remaining math isn't daunting. This helps the student improve grades and learn more effectively.

I specialize in tutoring high school and introductory physics and love working with high school and first year college students and have helped many taking conceptual, algebra based or calculus based physics. I find it very rewarding when a student experiences the "A ha!" moment and becomes able to solve challenging problems presented in their courses.

Speaking of AP exams: I have collected a sizable number of practice exams for AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C EM and AP Physics C ME. All provide great practice for students prepping for that all important exam.

I prefer to meet in person students at the Lisle Library, but can sometimes meet at another local library.

I have a Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering, worked as a Teaching Assistant in grad school at University of Illinois taught at Iowa State University, where I taught fluid mechanics, and aerodynamics. I occasionally do take engineering students and help them with those topics; I've also helped former AP Physics C students with statics. Over the past five years, I've tutored students enrolled at public high schools in Hinsdale, Lombard, Willow Springs, Villa Park, Western Springs, Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville, and Aurora, students at Benet Academy and students at University of Illinois, UC Berkeley, and North Central College; this allowed me to familiarize myself with the specific curricula at these schools.

Location: Lisle, Illinois (Next to Naperville)

Hours of operation:
Weekdays: 9 am-6 pm Central Time
Saturday: 9 am-4 pm Central Time.
Sundays: Noon-5 pm Central Time.

I know students schedules are sometimes unpredictable and they may need an occasional appointment outside these times. I do sometimes meet established students outside the posted hours especially in the weeks before finals when a student might have a critical need.

Contact me if you want a friendly, flexible tutor who will explain physics at your level and help you organize your own study sessions to succeed.

I have over 10 years teaching and tutoring students from high school to graduate level. My specialty is tutoring physics, helping students focus on developing concepts. I also assist with final preparation for AP exams. I have a Mechanical Engineering, M.S. and Ph. D. University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Mechanical Engineering, B.S. Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.

Mechanical Engineering,

Mechanical Engineering

My BS, MS and PhD are all in Mechanical Engineering. Having concentrated in the 'thermofluids' area, I taught fluid mechanics, aerodynamics and thermodynamics at the undergraduate and graduate level. I especially like enjoy helping undergraduates master these topics. Although I have covered all topics in Mechanical Engineering, I currently limit tutoring in ME to undergraduate fluid mechanics, gas dynamics and aerodynamics.

Great first lesson

My son enjoyed his first lesson with Lucia for AP Physics C. She was very organized and simplified the topic as well as taught him some short cuts to get the answer faster. She has great knowledge about the topic and even gave some extra practice problems to work on. We are looking forward to more lessons with Lucia!

Amy, 7 lessons with Lucia

Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic in teaching

Lucia taught Electromagnetism topic in AP Physics 2 and it was easy for my son to understand and learn the concepts with her tutoring while he missed those topics when taught at school.

Goal oriented Well experienced Great teaching skills Well liked by student Punctual Keeps the review interesting Focused on topic Great choice

Shesh, 28 lessons with Lucia

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Lucia focused on the conceptual theory behind the equation. I found this to be an excellent approach. She is very coherent in explaining a difficult topic. I would highly recommend her.

Kate, 14 lessons with Lucia

Knowledge and patient tutor

Lucia helped me work through a challenging Physics 2 (college-level) mid-term exam so that I could understand the mistakes I made. I feel I have a better understanding of the concepts.

Diana, 2 lessons with Lucia

Very Prompt and Knowledgeable

Lucia Helped me with calculus based physics (Physic II), she was very knowledgeable and had no issues guiding me with my homework. Lucia was even able to provide extra problems for me to review before exams. She has a good understanding of what teachers are expecting or looking for, even strict teachers. If you're struggling to make connections between formulas or relationships between variables she can help. Lucia is also very friendly, available, and understanding. She makes for a very good tutor.

Joe, 38 lessons with Lucia
