About Debra

With over 25 years of teaching experience in both public and private schools, I have learned how to recognize the needs of individual students and how best to help them. I am a certified teacher who cares if students are successful. Let's work together to improve grades and become more prepared to meet the challenges of elementary and higher education.

It is my desire to see students in all grades achieve their learning goals while enjoying the education process. Students will be tutored at their own pace of learning and experience success at every level.

While it's true that emails and texts have their place in our world; many employers and top colleges still want to communicate with people who have excellent reading, writing, proofreading and vocabulary skills. Let me help you to be successful. Elementary thru College students can receive the help they need.

I have over ten years of experience in teaching Microsoft Word practical applications and desktop projects like posters, invitations, business cards, menus and other documents.

If you're interested in learning or improving in areas where I have experience, please contact me to learn more about what I can teach you and schedule lessons. I am available Monday through Friday from noon to 8 p.m. If a weekend tutoring session is desired, please contact to check availability to set the date and time for that session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

Teaching students career development in areas of Career Internship and Interrelated Careers (which is a work program course for Juniors and Seniors) has been part of my teaching assignments for the past seven years. My responsibility as a classroom teacher was to instruct students in the preparation of resumes, applications, cover letters, interviewing techniques and becoming familiar with employer/mentor evaluations. Students were taught about proper work ethics, dressing appropriately, identifying personal and work values, interpersonal skills on the job, conflict resolution techniques and how to work through issues.

Desktop Publishing

My teaching experience in desktop publishing included three types of applications: QuarkXPress (4 years); Microsoft Word (7 years); and Adobe InDesign (4 years). All applications were courses taught at the high school level where I taught business courses for 14 years. The usual method of instruction included and began by discussing the purpose of of the document, general explanation of skills to be used while viewing the finished product, step-by- step teacher demonstration alternating with student repeating each step hands-on.

Microsoft Word

I have more than 10 years experience teaching Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint applications. I can provide you with instruction and lessons that will enable you to reach your academic and/or job-related goals.

Proofreading

Proofreading has been a fundamental required skill for teaching business skills to students preparing to enter the work force and college. Application processes require that forms and documents be completed skillfully and accurately. I am detail-oriented with strong listening and editing skills.

Reading

I am a certified teacher of students grades 6-12. The fundamental skills of reading and writing are key steps for learning some of the higher skills I have instructed in such as: resumes, letters, reports, and essays.
