About Lana

I received my Level 5 TESOL certification in 2014 in Costa Rica through International TEFL Academy. Since then I have done private ESL lessons for beginners to advanced students.

I have a passion for languages as they embody the culture it comes from and learning a new language includes learning a new culture. I think it's a wonderful way to understand people who are different from you. Cross-cultural communication is ever more important in this world today and what better way to become a part of it than learning another language.

My Level 5 TESOL Certification consists of 190 hours of coursework in addition to 20 hours of student teaching practicum with real ESL students ranging from beginners to advanced. I have taken in a few students to do private lessons with while they were visiting the country on vacation. One student made a point to tell me that upon his return to English classes in his home country he tested two levels above where he was when we first started his private lessons. I believe in the complete language immersion approach and only use the target language, English, during class. Everything needed to be successful is provided in the class session, however practice and studying outside of class is important for optimum learning.

I have done volunteer tutoring and homework help for about four years with students K-12. Much of the homework help I did was for foreign languages, usually Spanish. I am bilingual; English is my first language and Spanish is my second. I started learning the language when I was 12 and have studied extensively, taken the AP test and received a 5 on it. I lived for 2 months in Costa Rica and upon my return to the US worked for two years in a business with 50% of communication being in Spanish with customers and co-workers.

Depending on the intensity the student is looking for my Spanish tutoring strategies may mirror a language immersion approach, in an effort to truly learn the language and become a fluent Spanish speaker, class would be conducted in the same way an ESL class would be, this time the target language would be Spanish. However, for students who are not as interested in high intensity tutoring sessions, Spanish tutoring can mimic many school language programs that teach Spanish while speaking English in class. Classes can be tailored to the students specific needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
