About Lindsey

I am an enthusiastic, caring, and knowledgeable educator with lots of experience and a love for helping kids and teens have success in school. I received a Master's Degree in School Counseling so that I could better understand the many parts of the student that contribute to both struggles and success in achieving happiness in school and life. I am currently employed as a high school resource teacher, specializing in working with students with special needs or learning/behavior challenges. I have had many years of success in finding the potential in the down and out students and helping them to thrive!

In my current job, it is one of my responsibilities to tutor a variety of subjects as well as teach study skills, organizational skills, give homework assistance, and advocate for students to their teachers. Most importantly, I build trusting and caring relationships with each one of my students so that they will be willing to work hard for me and with me. I have tutored just about every subject under the sun, and believe that building confidence is the key to success. I hope to have the opportunity to work with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have had 7 years of experience as resource teacher and Professional School Counselor working with students with ADD and ADHD. I have worked with both the inattentive type and the hyperactive type of the disorder and have become equipped with many different strategies to help these students succeed academically. Students with ADD/ADHD often need information broken down into smaller bits, and need to revisit material for shorter durations of time with more frequency. They also need frequent breaks, clarification of directions, sometimes organizational help and coaching, and are often helped by incorporating some sort of movement into the learning process. Even having something in their hands to maneuver (such as a pipe cleaner) while learning can be tremendously helpful. One parent of a student with ADHD that I have tutored submitted a testimonial on my WyzAnt profile of her satisfaction with my expertise in this area.

Bible Studies

I graduated from Wheaton College, which is a Christian college that requires classes in Old Testament, New Testament, and Christian Thought classes in order to graduate. I have also taught/counseled in the Catholic school system for the past 7 years and have completed required religious education hours. I was also the director of Children's Ministry at my church for one year, and continue to volunteer teaching Bible lessons at Vacation Bible School.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently a resource teacher that assists high school students with all subject areas including math, English, Spanish, science, and social studies. The content I currently tutor is on a higher level, but must be broken down for students to understand. I often refer to elementary (K-6th) methods to break things down for my students. I hold a master's degree and am proficient especially in English language skills and elementary math.

Special Needs

I just completed my 5th year working in a high school setting as a resource teacher, managing students' IEPs, so I have significant experience in the special education setting. In my Master Degree coursework (M.A. in School Counseling) I have taken classes in teaching exceptional children, and have 8 total years of experience in this field. I have worked with a variety of special needs, and understand that it takes an individualized, differentiated approach to help these students be successful. I currently tutor and have tutored several students with Learning Disabilities, and utilize many different interventions to teach these students effectively- including creative, multi-sensory approaches, project-based and experiential learning, assistive technology devices when necessary, etc...

Study Skills

I am currently employed as a resource teacher, teaching study skills to high school students. I have a master's degree in school counseling, and have done significant research on how the brain functions and how to work with multiple intelligences and learning styles. I teach test-taking strategies, proper study techniques, organizational skills, and much more. Most students think that studying is merely opening a book and staring at the pages, but I can help teach them how to get the most out of their study time!
