About Maureen

Hello! My name is Maureen. My three passions in life are books, piano, and yoga. First and foremost, I am a professional librarian. I obtained my master's in library and information science from Dominican University in River Forest, IL in 2007.

Since then, I have been working with students of all ages within public libraries.
I also teach piano lessons as I have studied since age five.

I can expertly match a child or adult's interests, age and reading level to find books with which they will enjoy and excel. This leads to confidence, which in turn leads the student further along. All of this in a supportive, fun manner so that the student does not feel pressured or intimidated. The same process applies to adults as well that may be having difficulty for whatever reason.

Another area I've found success was with the ACT. I scored in the upper percentiles easily in Reading and English when I took the exam to enroll in college. Reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar have always come naturally to me, and I enjoy helping people polish their written work to the best of their capability.

My work as a librarian has also given me the opportunity to teach group computer classes to adults and children. I've provided instruction on topics ranging from very basic to advanced. I am an expert navigator of the internet and completely comfortable creating all kinds of documents using the Microsoft Office suite. In this down economy, I have helped hundreds of people create and format resumes and cover letters. Lastly, I provide one-on-one tutoring to library patrons looking to learn more about the capabilities of their tablets and various e-reading devices.

I've assisted countless students in their academic pursuits whether it be in depth research, writing and formatting papers, finding a subject that interests for a report or paper and regular homework help. I am comfortable tutoring in most subject areas because one trait of a good librarian is a broad knowledge of the world at large. The Dewey Decimal system literally allows categorization of any subject, and thus I can place any topic into a broad context and then hone in on whatever it is exactly the student requires.

I have experience teaching and book talking in the public schools in Lansing, IL. Public speaking comes naturally to me. I have done book talks, storytelling, research instruction and historical lessons. Lansing also requires students to do science fair projects, so I've assisted students in the library every winter. I've also given seminars both in the library and at the local schools for parents to bring awareness of all the tools at their children's disposal for an A+ science fair project and the steps required in order to achieve success.

Another skill of which I am proud is piano. I studied piano for 12 years from age 5 to 17 and now give private lessons to beginning students. I have an extensive knowledge of musical theory combined with the teaching skills to make learning this musical instrument FUN and exciting. I have a keen awareness of students' personalities after a few sessions and can easily ascertain the student's individual capabilities and boundaries. I believe each student of music is different in skills and the amount of work they can take on a weekly basis. Therefore, I adjust my methods to each student rather than inflicting the same rigid method to all students. Playing a musical instrument can be one of the highlights of a person's life. It increases intelligence across various subjects and provides an outlet for creativity and stress relief.

My philosophy is that in any subject students should not become overwhelmed. That sets the student up for frustration, anxiety and possible failure and that is not in my vernacular! It is the teacher's responsibility to ensure success by being sensitive to the students' needs and building them up gradually and at a comfortable pace.

I would love to help your student achieve at the highest level he or she is capable. I am open to ideas and willing to travel to accommodate families' busy schedules. If you choose me to help your child or teenager, I do not believe you will be disappointed. We will work together to find success and get a handle on school work or musicianship. I can relate as a parent as well, there is nothing more heartbreaking than watching one's son or daughter struggle. My wish is to help YOU help your child improve! Students are capable of exceptional work when they have the proper support and encouragement.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I am friendly, open-minded and ALWAYS put children's needs first. Thank you for taking the time to look over and read my profile!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a professional librarian, with a Master's in Library and Information Science from Dominican University in River Forest, IL, 2007. I manage a heavily used and valued children, 'tween and teen public library department. I assist 1000's of students and their parents every year in every subject. Some of this entails research help, homework assistance and helping readers find their way on the road to complete literacy. I have a nine year old daughter and assist her with homework and projects as well. She excels in school and I am aware of the current curriculums utilized. I've also attended continuing education seminars on Common Core. I teach in Lansing's public schools, providing library instruction, book talks and storytelling. I have a good rapport with children and understanding of young people's minds, therefore I easily find creative ways to help children do well and feel good about themselves in the process.
