Hi students, my name is Darci. I worked as a middle and high school English and ESL teacher for 8 years until I had children and had to stop working full time. I have a bachelors degree in English from the University of Central Florida, minor in history, and a masters in English Education from the University of South Florida, which included 15 credit hours of ESL coursework. I began tutoring college age ESL students in graduate school, and also tutored middle school students in English and reading. I taught high school for 4 years. Some of the courses I taught in that time were English 1, English 2, World History, Newcomer (ESL) Reading and Grammar, Intermediate (ESL) Writing and Grammar, and Beginning Reading for ESL. As a middle school teacher, I taught grade 6, 7, and 8 reading, writing, and grammar. In my time as a teacher, I frequently tutored outside of class and occasionally took on outside tutoring clients. I wrote all of my own curriculum materials and specialized in adapting grade-level coursework for struggling students.
As a teacher, I would describe my style as firm but very respectful and fair. I pride myself on identifying my students' needs and deficits (even if the student him/herself is not aware of them), and writing materials to address those needs. I also believe that forming warm and honest relationships is the best way to motivate students, and to that end, I am still in touch with many former students whom I now call friends. As a tutor, I am comfortable both working with existing assignments (like those for middle or high school classes) and creating customized materials, whichever better meets the needs of my students. I truly believe in the power of reading, writing, and speaking to transform lives and it is for this reason that I have devoted my professional life to helping students acquire these skills. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals! Hi students, my name is Darci. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
