Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

ACT English is a test for high school students looking to apply for college. I am qualified and experienced in training my students for all aspects of it- selecting the correct choices, reading, organizing, strategy, using correct grammar, punctuation, etc. Deciphering the meanings of words from contextual clues, writing on a particular topic, adding, revising, including the correct ideas, punctuation- all of these are tested through the ACT. The emphasis however, is on practical application of these concepts, and not on learning grammar rules by rote.

ACT Reading

ACT reading involves the reading of texts on a variety of topics and at the appropriate difficulty level. After that, there are a variety of questions that the student answers, based on his/her understanding of these texts.
So, while the rules of grammar, meanings of words and expressions, etc., may not be asked in a direct way, the ACT reading section involves making answer choices based on contextual clues, and the student's knowledge of English is tested this way.
The student needs to read fluently, and with understanding, and answer all questions, whether multiple choice or writing down answers, based on the understanding of the passages.

Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD work best in a quiet environment with minimum distractions. During my course of study to gain my teaching license, I have taken courses in Psychology and Special Education. These courses, as well as my experience working with students who have been diagnosed with ADHD, has helped me develop skills and techniques suited to students who may be hyperactive. I am currently working with three students with ADHD/ADD, and we enjoy a clear, respectful relationship, break down our tasks into manageable chunks, and have progressed academically as well as behaviorally. I also send parents regular feedback about their children's' progress, as well as interact with parents frequently.

Career Development

I am qualified to help students with Career Development as I have work experience as a Technical Editor in an IT firm where, among other responsibilities, I helped screen candidates based on their resumes.
I also trained employees in communication skills, particularly email communication.

My postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication has equipped me with the skills required to guide students in selecting relevant information to include on their resumes, what information to leave out, etc.
I have guided several students in the job application process- right from shortlisting relevant jobs, designing an impressive resume and editing it for errors, and preparing for the interview.

I have several satisfied clients whom I tutored in Career Development.

College Counseling

College counseling involves guiding students for suitable courses in college. I have completed my Bachelors and Masters Degrees, and am in college for my teaching credits. I have helped several High School students with their college application essays, and guided them with regard to choosing their streams of study, how to write effective statements of purpose etc. I have excellent writing and editing skills, and a knowledge of grammar, syntax, and punctuation. I am able to guide students on how to organize their thoughts on to paper in an effective way.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math is the foundation for middle school and high school Math. Therefore, I feel that it is very important to have rock strong elementary Math concepts. I help my students to master the basics of Elementary Math concepts like addition, subtraction, telling time, adding and subtracting money, working out word problems, and geometry.

As my students get ready, I introduce multiplication, division, more advanced concepts in geometry, fractions, ratios, etc. Consistent work, one on one focus and attention, and assignments and study materials that are interesting, go a long way in preparing a student for future success in Math.

In today's world, the value of one-on-one tutoring in Math cannot be emphasized enough. I feel that Elementary Math tutoring has really helped many of my students become better students for life.

The GRE is a test required to qualify for Masters level studies.
