Hello! I am Joan. I received my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education in 1979 from Edinboro State University in Pennsylvania.

I have 30 years of teaching experience; 23 of which have been in the area of special education. The balance of these years was as a second grade teacher, and as an elementary school librarian. Currently, and for the past 17 years, I have been employed in the Illinois public school system as a 2nd-5th grade special education resource teacher.

After all of these years, my love of teaching and learning is as strong as ever! I was born to be a teacher! Although I am an advocate of hard work on both the part of the teacher and the student, it comes naturally to me to make learning a fun experience. It is exciting for me to help my students set both academic and/or behavioral goals so that they are able to take ownership of their learning.

I have had many trainings in the areas of reading and math throughout my career. In reading I will be renewing my SLANT multi-sensory training this upcoming school year. Common Core Math trainings are readily available. In addition to these trainings and pullout intervention sessions, I work with students on a daily basis to support learning in their classrooms.

Special Needs

ADHD

ADHD

I have taught many students with ADHD/ADD throughout my career. Keeping current with new developments in the management of ADHD is essential for students to be successful personally and academically. Accommodations and modifications should be utilized in the least restrictive environment while setting reasonable expectations to maximize growth. I strive to understand which types of teaching methods will be most effective for students. Manipulatives, hands-on activities, time-timers, student generated goal setting, and behavior modifications strategies are just some of the "tricks of the trade." I always hope that parents will offer any knowledge or suggestions to me that they feel will help me understand their child. I received my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education.
