My love of teaching students comes from being a lifetime learner, and having the pleasure of watching students blossom and take pride in their achievements. Encouraging students and letting them know their hard work and interests is valued is an important part of the tutoring process. Using their interests, experiences, and prior knowledge enhance their ability to enjoy learning and retain information.
I am a retired certified teacher in Elementary Education and Special Education. Currently I substitute in a local elementary school and also do volunteer work with special education students in the area of pet therapy. My schedule in flexible, and I work with students in a quiet environment such as your local library. I am very patient and value the importance of students understanding the reasoning skills needed to apply their knowledge to every day life.
I have training in the Wilson Reading Program which is a specialized program in phonics and spelling which uses manipulative methods for helping students retain the skills in long term memory. I have also worked with students with ADHD in the areas of organizational/study skills and methods to retain their focus. In the area of math, I use manipulative methods for learning basic facts.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified teacher in special education. In my 21 years as a Resource teacher, I have had learning disabled, ADHD, Aspergers, autistic, and emotional disturbed children on my caseload. I have worked well together with a team of staff, social workers, classroom teachers, speech and language therapists, parents, and students to create the best IEP - Individualized Education Plan for each and ever student I have had the pleasure to work with over the years.
