About Jim

In terms of tutoring, my most proficient area is Spanish having taught it for four years and having lived in Toledo, Spain. In addition to a bachelor degree in Spanish and Great Books from the University of Notre Dame, I studied pre-med in a post-baccalaureate program at Northwestern University and earned a master degree in counseling psychology from Lewis University. Though I do not have the same competency as with Spanish instruction, I can assist students with high school level math and science.

Currently, I'm a school counselor at a local public high school finishing my tenth year after teaching Spanish for four years. On the college counseling side, I have extensive knowledge of many two and four-year colleges having assisted over 600 secondary students in discerning the next step in their educational careers. This knowledge comes from visiting colleges on a regular basis, researching schools to help students make a good decision, and actively cultivating relationships with college admissions counselors. My well-researched approach is geared toward finding a quality school at a price the family and student can afford.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In addition to having studied math through college-level Calculus, most of my tutoring at the high school I work at has been for math. My first two years at the school were as an academic support teacher in which I helped students with Algebra and Geometry. Currently, I am pursuing my math subject endorsement for the high school level.

Basketball

I have seven years of high school coaching experience at all levels, in addition to being an all-conference high school basketball player.

College Counseling

I serve as the college counselor at our high school, so I have had the opportunity to visit many colleges as well as to stay current with trends in higher education. I also have been a member of our state college counseling association for the past eight years, allowing me to attend our annual conference as well as national conferences three of the years. Every June, I coordinate a college application workshop for seniors at our high school.

ESL/ESOL

I led a program at a local company working with Spanish-speaking English language learners. In addition, at the high school I work at, I work with students whose first language is not English, helping them to better their skills and comprehend course material in a variety of subjects.

Psychology

I am an LPC (licensed professional counselor) with a master's degree in counseling psychology and currently work in a high school as a counselor.

Spanish

I am a certified Spanish Teacher and taught Spanish for four years at the high school level. I majored in Spanish at the University of Notre Dame and spent sophomore year of college studying at a Spanish university and living with a Spanish family.

Study Skills

In my eighth year as a guidance counselor, study skills are a daily topic I address with students. In addition, my background in psychology including a master's degree in it and my own research make me well-versed in different techniques and research-based approaches to improving organization and study strategies. Currently, our school implements a structured executive functioning program for all freshmen.
