Bachelors Degree from Eastern Illinois University (Elementary Education)
Kids are my passion! I was an elementary school teacher for 9 years and a private tutor for 14 years. I completed my student teaching experience in first grade in London, England. My first two years of professional teaching were in kindergarten at Ariel Community Academy. Ariel is a prestigious school that was started by Secretary of State Arnie Duncan and Don Rogers of Ariel Capital Management. I asked to be moved to 2nd grade my 3rd year at Ariel. It was so special to have my original first grade class now as 2nd graders! My 4th year of teaching I moved to sunny California and taught 3rd grade in a rural setting. After a year, my fiancé was given a job back in Chicago we couldn't refuse so I returned to Ariel to teach 4th and 5th Grade Social Studies. I ended my classroom teaching experience at Central School in Riverside where I taught one year of 2nd Grade and two years of 3rd. All of these traditions could be madding at times, but they prepared me for what was to become of my tutoring career.
I am very comfortable tutoring k-5 because I have classroom teaching experience in all of these grade levels. I am able to see what has been taught to the student and know what will be expected in the following grade. My tutoring experience goes up to 7th grade. My specialties are reading, writing, math, organizational skills, and working with kid who have high anxiety towards school. I love being a bridge of relief from school to home. For some of my students, it's one night where homework is our problem and mom and dad get a break. For others, it's reviewing those key concepts so the child doesn't fall behind in class. Also, it can be giving a gifted child that extra edge to succeed on their own level.
I have taught and or tutored elementary school math for 14 years. I have worked with UIC the creators of Everyday Math Curriculum on training teachers on how to teach their curriculum. I have dozens of songs, games, and activities to help your child to truly "see" how math works while retaining that information.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. There's nothing we can't handle as a team. Parent + Student+Tutor=Success Kids are my passion! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
