About Kevin

I had my first Spanish teaching experience while in a very small village in Costa Rica. I taught children and adults, ages 6-60. The main focus was Eco-tourism, as their village was losing business by not being able to give tours to English-only speakers. I found it very rewarding to not only teach a village new vocabulary and ideas related to Eco-tourism, but also to actually see a positive change in their small, Eco-tourism based economy. I tutor any level of Spanish, beginner to advanced. I enjoy teaching English, from beginner to high-advanced for native-speakers, as well as finding a comfortable yet rigorous teaching style and level for ESL (English Second Language) students. I recently received my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certification, and plan to teach English abroad in about a year.

From a hobby standpoint, I've been playing guitar (both acoustic and electric) for the last 8 years, and am always happy to give lessons. I offer lessons for beginners to mid-advanced players of all types of music. Lastly, I have been playing basketball for the last decade, and offer lessons for students qualified as beginners to high-advanced. I'm hoping to share my knowledge with those who seek to learn some new and unique tricks and tips!

I began learning Spanish at age 2, thanks to family members. I have a firm understanding on Spanish used in Central and South America, as opposed to Spain's Spanish. I am able to teach general Spanish, or teach specialized lessons depending on the country of interest. For example, if a student plans on moving to a particular country, I am able to focus on colloquialisms of that particular country to ensure a smoother transition within a culture. I have a Spanish degree from the University of Kansas that covered everything from phonetics and phonology, to Latin American literature, to Spanish Film with a particular focus during and after Francisco Franco's Dictatorship in Spain.

Being a native English speaker, I have taken advanced English courses throughout my entire life. I recently became TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certified and hope to teach English abroad in about a year.

I've been playing basketball for years, and I believe that it's equally important to stay in shape physically as it is mentally. I have minor experience coaching and playing for recreational league teams in college. I've attended multiple Bulls Basketball training camps as a youth and I believe that I have the necessary skills to pass along to the next generation.

My scheduling is very flexible and I'm looking forward to being of assistance! Be it an extra-curricular activity such as basketball, a mental flossing activity such as guitar, or an academic course such as Spanish or English, I'm eager to spread my knowledge of these topics, so please feel free to contact me!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Outstanding tutor! We would recommend him in a heartbeat! — Kevin taught my daughter to go forward with confidence and with strategic ways to not let the test intimidate her. He was very kind and helpful to her, passing on the lessons he learned from the same teachers 10 years ago. He spent extra time with her and spent time preparing for their lesson. He has a nice way of working, and my daughter was able to feel more prepared and happy about learning ...
