¡Hola Amigos! I earned my undergraduate degree in Spanish. As a student, I worked as a language tutor and helped a lot of college students improve their understanding of Spanish. We would not only work on grammar practice but also speaking, because applying grammar to speaking was one of the main challenges that a lot of students had despite their language training in high school. Apart from my department responsibility, I tutored outside of the university on my own time. I worked with high school students to prepare for final exams, to clarify grammar concepts/vocabulary, and to get ahead in the language.
I then pursued my Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language / Linguistics. I currently teach second language writing and grammar to international students whose first language is not English. I also teach freshman composition at a community college, a number of my students are bilingual. I have gained extensive experience knowing how to teach and to understand sundry students from all backgrounds. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
