About Kai

Kai H. is a saxophonist who is flexible in many musical situations.

During his time at ISU, Kai has been section leader and a strong influence in many of the groups he has taken part of. From big bands, jazz combos, quartets to rock bands, his direction has made performing fun for all those involved. Working with others and communication are two integral parts to achieving success when reaching a common goal.

Early in his career, Kai taught private saxophone lessons to students who just picked up their new horns. Many of the lessons dealt with the formation of an embouchure, learning the fingerings of the horn and producing a quality sound. Kai was drum major of Homewood-Flossmoor High school and lead woodwind sectionals to accurately perform music at a high level and by memory.

The best teachers are chameleon-like in how they approach their students. Every student has a unique way of learning and Kai is simply there to make it fun and relatable!

If you have a desire to improvise on your instrument, learn how to play over chord changes or play jazz music, please contact Kai! He shares that passion with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Saxophone

I've been playing the saxophone for 10+ years and have studied privately with Dr. Paul Nolen of Illinois State University for four years at the undergraduate level. In my studies, I spent my first two years balancing classical and jazz saxophone. As an upperclassman I focused solely on jazz as part of my Jazz Performance minor. During my college career I spent time on the soprano, baritone and bass saxophones and continue to play on my primary instruments, alto and tenor, for various types of ensembles. Those include jazz big band, jazz combo, concert band, saxophone quartet, saxophone ensemble and multiple rock bands. Early in my career I gave lessons to students who picked up an instrument for the first time. Lessons focused on constructing an embouchure, producing a quality tone, and learning fingerings and developing good technique throughout the horn. For advanced students seeking instruction in jazz and improvisation, I can offer tools to help students feel comfortable playing over chord changes, crafting a 'jazz sound' and understanding the theory behind the chords.
