About Morgan

My name is Morgan and I graduated May 2015 from The University of Texas with a degree in Education (Prek-6th). I received a specialization in literacy instruction, as well as a certification in ESL. I graduated with International High Honors and received my teaching certification in Texas. I have spent over 700 hours in a classroom, and throughout my four years at The University of Texas I conducted independent tutoring sessions where I structured lessons around my individual students needs.
Teaching and working with students is the most rewarding and fulfilling position, and I find such love and passion working with kids. I have a strong ability to create personal relationships with my students, and cultivate a trusting and supportive environment that empowers the student. Due to my ability to create these personal relationships, the students I work with feel safe to learn and explore with me, and I am able to individualize lessons to best fit varying students learning styles and personalities.

While receiving my degree from The University of Texas, I took extra courses to graduate with a specialization in literacy instruction. I learned how to identify the root area of reading and writing that is causing challenges, as well as specific techniques to overcome these obstacles.

My education degree focused on grades Prekindergarten-6th grade. I have student taught for 6 months in a kindergarten classroom where I assisted the lead teacher in creating and teaching lessons. I also student taught for a full school year in a third grade classroom; the first semester I learned about the students and partook in lesson planning, while the second semester I took over the classroom in a setting called Total Teach, where I replaced the lead teacher and created and taught all lessons plans, During Total Teach, I was considered the lead teacher, and was solely responsible for creating lesson plans, monitoring students behavior, holding parent-teacher conferences, lesson planning with the third grade team, and being sure all students met third grade requirements. While working with my third grade class, I created an after-school homework club for all 3rd-5th grade students, and this program is still in place at the school.

I am enthusiastic and passionate about working with students and am able to bring the best out of each student I work with. I have an energetic and supportive style of teaching that allows students to feel safe and empowered to explore challenging topics. I love seeing the growth in students and am able to create plans to get them to where they need/want to be and beyond.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

While doing my student teaching, I eventually took over for Total Teach, where I was responsible for creating and implementing lessons plans that met common core requirements. I taught while the students were preparing for the state exam (STAAR test in Texas). I created lessons that were approved by the staff, as well as principle.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in education (PreK-6th grade). I spent over 700 hours in classrooms ranging from Prek-6th grade, and all courses I took were aimed at teaching students in this age range. I passed my teaching certification test in Texas which was for grades Prek-6th grade.

Handwriting

I held a tutoring program while at The University of Texas where I conducted lessons around literacy instruction. One of the major focuses was handwriting (regular and cursive). For students that needed additional support on penmanship, I created worksheets that allowed for practice writing, as well as instructions and suggestions on easier ways to hold pencils, create the letters, and practice staying in the lines. For students who wished to learn cursive, I started at ground zero and introduced them to the cursive alphabet and conducted lessons very similar to those conducted for regular handwriting.

Phonics

I graduated with a specialization in Literacy Instruction. I took a course specialized in decoding and phonics, and led tutoring groups focusing on these topics. I have thorough knowledge on phonics and creating lessons supporting the topic of phonics.

Study Skills

While I was completing my student teaching portion of my degree at The University of Texas, I created an after-school homework club where students ranging from 3rd-5th grade would come into my classroom and I would help with homework help, and teach them helpful systems to learn how to be organized and form beneficial study skills. I would show them how to use a planner, create take-home folders, as well organizational skills. This homework club I created is still standing at Jollyville Elementary School.
