About John

I am very passionate about teaching and learning mathematics. I have been teaching mathematics for more than 25 years. I began teaching out of college - high school and middle school. I am currently a full-time mathematics professor. I have been teaching for my current employer for 23 years.

I believe that ALL people can learn mathematics. It is all about finding that area or subject that appeals to you most. I have seen many students come and go over the years, but not one has said that they left my class bored or that I was not passionate about the subject matter.

Mathematics and/or mathematical reasoning is not only important but a necessary skill to have in the workplace and for everyday living. If I did not believe this, I would not have been teaching for as long as I have.

I welcome any student that needs help in the areas of mathematics that I have indicated.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Taught basic, intermediate, and college algebra several times over the past 25 years, including 3 plus years of teaching in elementary and high school.

Calculus

Taught Calculus I, II, and III and Business Calculus at the college level over several years

Differential Equations

I have taught differential equations several times over my teaching career. Most recently, I taught differential equations in the Spring term of 2012. My students frequented my office hours daily. I am a proponent of daily homework - as I believe that the methods and procedures for solving differential equations are best learned through practice and application.

Finite Math

I have taught Finite Math several times over the past 20 years. I most recently taught this course during the Fall Term of 2014. I typically utilize both traditional and non-traditional methods when teaching this course. These include the use of power points for class presentations, calculator applications and the use of excel for linear programming applications.

Statistics

Twenty-plus years of teaching experience of college-level mathematics
Ph.D and Master's in Applied Statistics
Several years of teaching statistics and other mathematics courses
