All kids can learn, so it is imperative to meet them where they are and value where they are. From this place of acknowledgement and respect, I feel like I stand a chance of engaging kids in meaningful inquiry of their lives through literature and written expression. Once I know the student, then we can proceed to build on their skills. I listen well, and I encourage students to learn for the sake of learning, not necessarily to improve grades or test scores (although, those improvements will happen naturally).

While my credentials include a BBA, an MBA, and an M.Ed., the credential that says the most is my 14 years of high school teaching experience. My performance assessments bear out expertise in all areas of teaching English, and I am considered by students, colleagues, and administration to an excellent teacher of composition. Included in my experience is five years of teaching ACT English and Reading prep in my classes, and two years of teaching a grammar elective. I have also taught ACT English, Writing, and Reading through Sylvan Learning Centers.

I love language, kids, and teaching. Maybe one of the best things I've ever done as a teacher was to start a poetry club and spoken word poetry team at my school. Kids thrive there because it is a safe environment in which to use the written word to express themselves authentically.

I am no stranger to one-to-one tutoring - I have seven years of experience tutoring in school writing centers and literacy centers. I look forward to working with more students through one-to-one tutoring!

I conduct a writing workshop in my classes, and my role in the workshop is to edit final drafts. As such, I have made proofreading marks on hundreds - maybe thousands - of students' written pieces. In addition, my editing and proofreading skill was recently put to the test by Illumine magazine, for which I did some freelance work.
