About Bill

All kids can learn, so it is imperative to meet them where they are and value where they are. From this place of acknowledgement and respect, I feel like I stand a chance of engaging kids in meaningful inquiry of their lives through literature and written expression. Once I know the student, then we can proceed to build on their skills. I listen well, and I encourage students to learn for the sake of learning, not necessarily to improve grades or test scores (although, those improvements will happen naturally).

While my credentials include a BBA, an MBA, and an M.Ed., the credential that says the most is my 14 years of high school teaching experience. My performance assessments bear out expertise in all areas of teaching English, and I am considered by students, colleagues, and administration to an excellent teacher of composition. Included in my experience is five years of teaching ACT English and Reading prep in my classes, and two years of teaching a grammar elective. I have also taught ACT English, Writing, and Reading through Sylvan Learning Centers.

I love language, kids, and teaching. Maybe one of the best things I've ever done as a teacher was to start a poetry club and spoken word poetry team at my school. Kids thrive there because it is a safe environment in which to use the written word to express themselves authentically.

I am no stranger to one-to-one tutoring - I have seven years of experience tutoring in school writing centers and literacy centers. I look forward to working with more students through one-to-one tutoring!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

As a high school English teacher, Bill devoted a portion of his American Literature (juniors) class to ACT prep for Reading. Also, he conducted successful ACT prep classes at Learning Centers.

English

An educator with 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience, Bill works with students at all levels from middle school through graduate school. His teaching experience includes seventeen years teaching English at two High Schools and a Middle School.

Grammar

Bill taught a grammar-focus class for two years.

Proofreading

I conduct a writing workshop in my classes, and my role in the workshop is to edit final drafts. As such, I have made proofreading marks on hundreds - maybe thousands - of students' written pieces. In addition, my editing and proofreading skill was recently put to the test by Illumine magazine, for which I did some freelance work.

Public Speaking

I wrote the curriculum for a public speaking class in my first high school teaching job, and I taught the class for one year there. I also taught public speaking for two other semesters in my second teaching job. I have been involved with Toastmasters, International as a participant. Also, I coach a spoken word poetry team, which involves message crafting and public speaking skills.

Reading

Bill teaches a daily reading class focused on specific reading strategies for improved comprehension and critical thinking.

Writing

Bill encourages writers to trust their voices as they create text for a variety of purposes and audiences, and he offers individualized help with a variety of written forms, including high school, college, and graduate school admission essays, standardized test essays (ACT, SAT, PARCC), short fiction, poetry, literary analysis essays, academic essays, and resumes.
