I am a retired elementary school teacher with 35+ years of experience. I have a special education background with Deaf and Hard of hearing students. My career includes time in a self contained hearing impaired class as well as 14 years with fourth graders and 7 years with 5th graders. For several years I was in a co-taught inclusion classroom , so I have worked with special needs students and prepared many differentiated lessons for individual children. I currently do substitute teaching with K-5 students. I am also a coach with the Girls on the Run program in an area school district.
I believe a student's academic success is built not only on the skills required for each subject, but also on building up confidence and self esteem. I try first to help struggling students see what they can do as opposed to what they can not do! I work hard to incorporate all of the different learning styles in each lesson. I also have a good working knowledge of educational apps that help students have fun while learning. My greatest joy is witnessing the "aha" moments when a student grasps a concept!
I have had 35 years experience teaching elementary school math. I have worked the past 4 years with the new Common Core standards as well. I believe in using manipulatives when possible to help students grasp difficult concepts.
Over my years of teaching I have worked with many struggling readers. I have experience with many techniques geared towards helping struggling readers in each area from phonics to fluency and comprehension. I have a large personal selection of learning games that help students become more proficient in both reading and writing.
I was actively teaching when the transition began to Common Core standards. I am familiar with several sites that can aid students in understanding those standards. I am always researching these sites to stay informed and up to date with these changes. I also have memberships in several sites that offer practice pages for all Common Core Standards.
I taught all of the subjects as an elementary classroom teacher. I have experience teaching science and social studies for the content area, but also focused on the reading skills needed to be successful in those subjects. Improving study skills was also a very important component of each lesson. I helped student learn to study for tests and how to use valuable strategies when taking the tests.
As a classroom teacher, I understand that each student is an individual with strengths and weaknesses. I want to help students do the best they can in school and feel confident in their abilities as well as prepare them to be successful in life. Leslie tutors my shy 5 year old who has a cognitive delay. Leslie has been a god send! She is patient with my daughter, is able to get her to interact and answer her (problems she had in her kindergarten class all year), keep her attention span and transition to a new task as needed. My daughter loves the worksheets Ms. Leslie leaves for her to do! Leslie is an all around knowledgeable and experienced tutor with the patience of a saint.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a full time teacher when the Common Core standards began to be implemented. I worked on grade level committees to unpack and understand the new standards. I have taught reading and math using these standards based on the Engage NY program.
Over many years of teaching I was involved in curriculum planning in the area of language arts. I have experience with many approaches to teaching reading, including whole language activities, balanced literacy strategies, as well as teaching the common core standards. I am proficient at keeping running records, evaluating reading skills, and assessing reading comprehension.
