About John

I believe that every student can learn, and it is up to the tutor to break down and present the material in a way that matches each individual student’s style of learning.

I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University. I have been a highly successful computer programmer and manager in the private industry. My strong background in math, engineering, and programming, complemented by my pleasant, patient personality, make me ideally suited for tutoring in these areas.

I strive to help the student understand not only how to solve problems, but also the fundamental principles that underlie the solution. I can show a student how to succeed not only at their homework, but also how to prepare for tests and complete work on their own. It is important to focus on student motivation as well, making the material interesting and relevant, so that they want to succeed. I appreciate getting feedback from students and/or parents so that I can adjust my lessons to the individual student and how they learn best.

For the first meeting, I would like to meet with the parent and student to determine if I am the right fit for the material being presented and to make sure that they feel comfortable working with me. It would be my preference to meet at a public establishment, such as a local library, book store or coffee house. Once we agree to work together, we can establish a mutually beneficial time schedule and meeting place. Please bring along any textbooks, notes, tests, or homework sheets that would help me understand the material and what the student is finding challenging.

I really enjoy math and programming, and I want to instill this same love of learning in the students I help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I was the Outstanding Senior Math Student in my high school and my love of math led me to a career in engineering. I also have a Minor in Mathematics from my undergrad university. I continued my math and engineering studies further at Northwestern University and went on to work in the computer engineering field for almost 20 years. I know I can help your son or daughter succeed.

Algebra 2

I have always had a strong aptitude and love of Math. I was the Outstanding Senior Math student at my high school and went on to study Math and Engineering in undergrad. I strive to help students understand the basic principles underlying the methods, not just help with homework. I know I can help your child succeed at any level in Math.

C

I have programmed in C for many of my 20 years in the video game/virtual reality business. I used C for the console versions of Mortal Kombat 5, 6, and 7 and moved to C++ for the next two games. I was formally trained in Pascal, a precursor to C. I am ideally suited to helping others learn C or any other language I am familiar with, including C++, C#, Pascal, Python, and Java.

C++

I used C++ to program Mortal Kombat 8 and 9 for home consoles with the Unreal Engine. I also used C++ early in my career to make a virtual reality world creator program for Windows. I am ideally suited to help others learn C++ or any other language I know, including C, Pascal, C#, Python, and Java. I have used C++ for a number of my 20 years in the game/virtual reality business.

Calculus

I was the Outstanding Senior Math Student in my high school, taking AP calculus before pursuing an electrical engineering undergrad degree with a math minor. I have been a professional programmer for 20 years, and math is a part of my daily life. I believe that it is important to learn the fundamentals behind the material in math so the student understands how to use the information in new ways, not just do homework and cram for tests. I know I can help your child succeed in Calculus.

Computer Programming

I have programmed for all of my 20-year career in the video game/virtual reality industries. I am knowledgeable in many programming languages, including C, C++, C#, Java, Python, and Pascal. I am self-taught in many of these languages, and am perfectly suited to help others learn on their own or in the classroom.

Electrical Engineering

I have a Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering Science with a concentration in Electrical Engineering. Early in my career, I worked for Motorola, designing circuits with microprocessors and programming them to perform a specific task, such as a data terminal emulator to test an digital-to-analog converter board for a police radio. I have a firm grasp of the basic principles of Electrical Engineering.

Java

I know many computer languages, including C, C++, C#, Python, and Java. I have programmed my entire 20-year career, mostly in the games industry. Recently, I have explored Java and Android programming on my own for tablet development. I love to solve problems and programming is the tool I use to make exciting things happen onscreen. I know I can help your son or daughter gain a greater knowledge and enjoyment of programming.

Prealgebra

I was the Outstanding Senior Math Student in my high school. I continued pursuing my love of math in undergrad, earning a Math Minor and Engineering Degree. I came up to Chicago to get a Master's Degree at Northwestern and stayed to work in the software engineering field for almost 20 years. I know I can help your child succeed.
