About Donna

I have been in the English as a Second Language/Bi Lingual Dept. of a school in Glen Ellyn, Illinois since 2000. I have initially worked with a Hispanic population, as I speak Spanish fluently. I then had the experience of working with African refugees mainly from Somalia and the Sudan. In addition, I am currently working with Asian refugees from Burma, Nepal and Thailand. I have also taught Adult English as a Second Language at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois for eight years.

I am careful to include reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities in each lesson. I use a guided teaching method with modeling for the student so that eventually they may be able to apply the things they have learned and do the exercises independently.

I love tutoring because I really enjoy the one on one experience with a student as opposed to small group settings or the classroom. We can accomplish so much more and go so much deeper into topics and content. I also love that I am able to form better relationships with a student which is so important in education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
