I love helping students to succeed. It is my job as a certified teacher in all the sciences and social sciences to help students become aware of their strengths and teach them methods to overcome their weaknesses. Usually just a few sessions and a lot a positive reinforcement will work wonders with a frustrated student. I consider my student's success as my measure of my own success.
I have many years of teaching experience in all types of environments with all types of students. As a substitute in several districts for many years, I have been in all types of schools and classrooms. I have also taught in a private high school, college, the business world, and in a children's hands on science museum. My background is a broad brush of many different teaching experiences and I bring this experience to the table with each student I work with.
I began my teaching in the social science areas of Economics, Government (Political science) and Sociology and through additional schooling I have become certified in Psychology, AP U.S. History, World History, as well as AP Biology, AP Earth Science, Chemistry and Physics. I also love to write and have taught literature, creative writing, and Argument and Rhetorical Analysis. I particularly like to help students analyze and improve their study skills and have been quite successful at this.
Please see an example of my work in the Lessons section where I wrote an explanation of Active Transport for the Biology section.

My daughter just took her first ACT and I was extremely pleased at the schedule of work and activities Diane prepared. Leading up to test day Diane prepared a very targeted program that was extremely beneficial! We are very pleased with Diane and couldn't be happier to recommend her to others!
Diane is an excellent teacher, very patient and helpful. She helped me a lot to improve my English, especially conversations. We practiced in many fields; history travel and many others. I would recommend her to other students. I'm really grateful for her help.
Diane loves to teach and learn. She enjoys kids and helping them and it shows. Never would I expect to see my son smiling and laughing about grammar but he loved Diane and was completely engaged. He just took his ACT but in his practice ACT he scored higher on the grammar section than he typically does. I recommend Diane, she makes it fun and her passion is infectious! And she really knows her stuff!
Ms. G. is truly an outstanding teacher because of her dedication to her students. She always made sure that I understood the material. She is very hard working and motivating. She always encouraged me and kept me focused. She cares a lot about her student's success. I highly recommend her.
We have been seeing Diane for about 8 months now. From the first time we contacted Diane she was so accommodating regarding our needs and working with us to find a time/s that would work with our daughter’s busy schedule.
We have used Diane for Honors English and study skills. Diane wanted to understand and assess my daughter’s strengths and weaknesses, instead of being like every other tutor and offer her everything from A to Z. Diane targets where my daughter needs help and works on those areas while constantly unassumingly reassessing to find other areas to make her a better student.
Diane is a very proactive tutor and not a reactive tutor. Diane not only helps my daughter on what she needs help on now, but she also tailors her style towards where my daughter will need help down the road. Every time I have observed Diane with my daughter there are so many wonderful teaching moments!!
Diane is very organized and structured. Diane provided my daughter with handouts in study skills and also Honors English (writing) to help her now and in the future.
We will continue to use Diane, and our family highly recommends her. While we have only used her for English, writing and study stills, we are confident Diane is excellent in all her subjects. You just know when you have a great tutor, and Diane is a great tutor.
Diane has been a godsend! Our daughter started struggling academically after changing schools and going into high school. As a result, our daughter's confidence in herself and enjoyment of school suffered dramatically. Diane has helped our daughter develop and implement effective study skills. These are skills often not taught in schools but which can make the difference between school success and failure: how to critically read textbooks and sources for maximum understanding, how to effectively take notes, how to organize thoughts and assigments, how to organize and prepare for tests and exams, how to break down large projects into manageable pieces, etc. Diane's personality and teaching experience have equipped her with incredible patience, tolerance, and understanding. In addition, her experience helping ADHD students has been tremendously helpful. Thank you, Diane for helping our daughter believe in herself again!
We were extremely pleased with the tutoring Diane provided for our daughter. Our daughter, who is an honors student, was struggling with an Honors English course in high school. Her grade had fallen. She had 6 weeks left in the semester to bring up her scores. Diane was able to review her past assignments and help our daughter focus on what was important. She spent time assessing her skills to determine where she needed the most help. She provided excellent study resources as well as teaching her HOW to study, how to review and study chapters in textbooks in the most efficient manner, how to properly provide answers to essay questions on exams, etc. She read through some of her papers and provided some guidance but didn't write the paper for her or change her ideas. Our daughter aced her final exam and brought her grade up to a high B within the six week time frame. We will definitely call Diane again when our children need guidance with homework. The "how to study" lessons our daughter learned were invaluable. Thank you, Diane!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an experienced English teacher and also write a lot for both a hobby and for business. I am very well versed in grammar, style and mechanics of the English language. I am also quite knowledgeable about test taking skills and teach/tutor them routinely. Between these two major skills, I feel I am well qualified to tutor for the ACT English exam.
I have had a great deal of Math in high school and college and always got A's in it. I was an Economics undergraduate major and had to have 2 years of Algebra, PreCalculus and Calculus. I have also had basic Statistics. I enjoy the challenge of Math and primarily use it in the science courses I teach. I try to help the student understand what they are doing and why; not just memorize the process of getting the answer.
I have been tutoring high school students for a long time in the ACT test and am quite comfortable with it. I have excellent grades in English language and literature and have taught World Literature and Creative Writing at a small private high school. I feel my reading comprehension is quite high.
I have a 6 to 12 teaching certificaton in science, specifically AP Biology, AP Earth and Space Science, Chemistry and Physics (Physical Science). I regularly teach Biology and Lab at both the high school and college freshman levels. I also love Earth Science, and anything to do with space exploration. I really enjoy any and all topics science related and equally love to teach/tutor in these exciting and rapidly changing disciplines.
I have a grown son who was diagnosed with ADD as a young student. I have tutored a high school student with ADHD for a couple of years now. I learned about ADD/ADHD in the Exceptional Child class that all certified teachers in the state of Illinois are required to take (I am a certified middle school and High school teacher.) When I worked as a substitute teacher I volunteered to take these assignments because I had experience with my own son and some background in it. I was usually successful with these students and they often asked for me because "I understood".
I have teaching certification in all the natural sciences and all the social sciences. As a result I have had several semesters of Algebra, Geometry, PreCalc and Calculus as well as Statistics in college. They were required courses for my major in Economics.
I am very comfortable with Algebra and would enjoy tutoring it.

I have a minor in Sociology, which is intricately related to Anthropology. I took several anthropology courses to fulfill a requirement for the Sociology minor. I teach Sociology and incorporate introductory Anthropology concepts into my Sociology courses. I am very comfortable and confident in Anthropology.
I have a current IL certification in AP Biology and am currently teaching it. I started my undergraduate studies as a Biology/PreMed major. Biology has been a love of mine since childhood.
I would love to tutor in Biology, at any level.
I am a secondary education teacher certified in Biology. I am fully qualified to teach Botany. I just finished teaching a college freshman Biology course,(which is the AP HS course) and will be teaching it again this fall with the corresponding Lab.
My first career was about 12 years in the business world. My Masters is in Human Resources from Loyola University.
I then changed careers and went into teaching at the secondary ed level. I am certified in all the social sciences and all the hard sciences.
I feel with my business background combined with my teaching background I would be very comfortable teaching business. I am also familiar with both high school and college business course curricula.
I have a natural talent for working with high school and college level students in helping them assess their personality characteristics, analyze and find data of different jobs, and thinking about whether a job "fits" them or not.
As a high school and college teacher (freshman) I have many opportunities to informally help students with their career decisions. Because I have a Master's degree in Human Resources, and worked for 12 years in the field, I understand "jobs" and their unique characteristics quite well.
I love counseling students and enjoy helping them see things in new and different perspectives. Students tell me I am quite good at counseling -- better than their actual school counselors in some cases.
I am certified to teach Chemistry at the high school level. I appreciate the importance of chemistry in understanding the world we live in for almost everything we do throughout the day has a basis in chemistry. I have grown to understand why chemistry can be a fearful subject for some students and I help them overcome that fear. I enjoy this subject because I really appreciate its importance in daily life AND how much it impacts the other science subjects. And, chemistry lab, particularly Organic chemistry lab, is a lot of fun.
As a HS teacher certified in all the natural sciences including AP Biology I have had many courses in Ecology as well as a closely related field of Environmental Biology. It is one of my favorite areas and an ecology unit is always my last unit in Biology class for the year.
I thoroughly enjoy ecology and would love to tutor in it.
I have a B.S. degree in Economics from Iowa State University. I have tutored many people over the years in both macro and micro economics. I love the subject and would like to pass the on to my students.

I volunteered for two years in the GED pogram at Waubonsee Community College
I am a certified secondary education Social Studies teacher with an undergraduate major in economics and minors in political science and sociology. I had many courses with geography as a theme running through them. I have also had World Geography.
I find geography and interesting topic which is shamefully not taught or not taught well by our schools. I always incorporate geography into my classes where ever I can.
I am certified in both high school and middle school to teach all branches of science, including Biology (Life Science), Chemistry, Physics (Physical Science), and Earth Science (Geology). I am also certified to teach AP Biology and AP Earth Science. My credential are less than 5 years old. I am currently teaching Biology with Lab. I have tutored a lot in science.
I have a degree in Economics and it required me to take enough credits in government that I went ahead and got a minor in it. I am currently certified to teach government at the AP level in high school. In addition my son worked for the the national Obama campaigns both times, and I got to learn about all the behind the scenes things that go on in a Political campaign, from staff recruitment, to resource allocation, to securing office space, to mass communications and to public relations. It was extremely informative to see all that happens. I feel very comfortable in this subject.
I teach college in an accelerated premed program. I use sample MCAT materials in my classes all the time. I am particularly familiar with the writing and behavioral sciences and biology parts of the exam. The entire faculty is familiar with the exam and all of its parts. We teach the skills to do well on it as a routine daily part of our curriculum.
I am certified to teach AP Biology. In the curriculum to gain that certification I had to take a Microbiology class and Lab. It was a 5 credit class. Between the class and microbiology units in regular biology I feel confident that I could tutor in this subject. It is my favorite sub-area of Biology.
I am certified in both high school and middle school to teach all branches of science, including Biology (Life Science), Chemistry, Physics (Physical Science), and Earth Science (Geology). I have many college credits in Math and statistics because it was required for my major in Economics. I am comfortable tutoring in PreAlgebra and Algebra 1. I try to teach my students to understand the concepts behind the numbers, so they understand in "words" what their equation means and how to interpret it.
As an English composition and Creative Writing teacher I have a very high understanding of how important proofreading is. It is critically important for serious writers. I took an online class in editing and proofreading just to increase my skill and awareness on this topic. My students can tell you it is a topic I get really riled up about. It can make or break an otherwise good writer.
I have a secondary education certificate in the state of Illinois which certifies me to teach middle school and high school I am certified in ALL the social sciences including Psychology. I have approximately 36 college credits, including graduate credits in this subject. My Master's degree is also very closely related to the field of Psychology. It is my favorite social science class to teach.
I teach English and the social sciences as well. In English class I teach a unit on Public Speaking. I have many textbooks and handouts and other materials to use for this. I always work with my students to have practice runs actually at a podium and preferably with a microphone. I also teach them how to handle their notes, how to read their notes with expression, gesture and articulate appropriately and use good tone and word choice. I also teach them how to handle handouts, Power-points, visual aids and last but not least "stage fright"
I feel I can definitely help a student in this subject.
I have tutored many students in test taking skills and reading skills. This is an important topic. I always start my normal classes with a review of good reading techniques. These techniques help in class and also on standardized tests like the SAT Reading.
I have done a lot of writing in my life for various purposes and have always received excellent scores and nice comments. I am very good in grammar and interested enough in the use of correct grammar to look up questions I might have. This practice of course improves your subject knowledge.
There is more to writing than just knowing the rules though and that is style and voice. I understand these concepts and have taught them rigorously when I taught English and Creative Writing.
I feel I can help students learn a checklist of things to do to get a high score on the SAT writing test.
I have been sewing since I was a small child, approximately 40 years. I have made all types of simple and complex projects from tailored suits, lots of my own clothing, to simple projects that I used to teach my own daughter to sew. I come from a long line of "sewers" as my grandmother taught me. My mom, her sister, my cousin and I are (were) all serious sewers.
I am very patient with young children. I believe that learning to sew is an excellent life skill.
I am a certified secondary ed teacher and have subbed for many years, preschool through high school, which taught me to work with all levels of children. Last school year I went into the sewing lab in my free period and helped the girls and the teacher, just because I enjoyed it.
I have a minor in Sociology which includes approximately 16 college credits. I taught Sociology 101 at the freshman college level, last semester and this semester will be teaching Medical Sociology to a group of college PreMed students. I belong to the Chicago Area Sociology Teachers group, which is an excellent resource for Sociology teachers.
I am a certified secondary education teacher in the State of Illinois, and am certified in Sociology, and all other Social Studies areas as well as all the hard sciences.
Study skills is a subject area I have a great deal of experience in, ranging from grade school to college students. It covers such areas as organization, time management, how to read a textbook, how to find important information, test taking skills, and other topics. It is important to determine for each student what area they need the most help in and work from that starting point.
As a certified secondary education teacher with a middle school endorsement I have had much education in how to help students who are struggling. I substitute taught for 8 years in Pre-K through seniors in high school and I worked with all sorts of children who needed special help in their studies. As a high school teacher I taught my students at the beginning of the school year good study practices and checked on them throughout the year. Just yesterday, I gave a lesson to my freshman, on how to properly understand a textbook and how it was organized so that the student could maximize their studying in the least amount of time. I feel very qualified to handle this topic at all age levels, from both my educational background and my experience with students of all ages.
I have been an avid reader all my life and I also enjoy writing. As a result, my vocabulary has become fairly large. People comment to me that they are impressed with my vocabulary and most editors and professors give me high marks on my writing. When I teach writing I also include vocabulary building, for to speak and write well is to make a good impression as an educated person.
I have a secondary education certificate in the state of Illinois which certifies me to teach middle school and high school I am certified in ALL the social sciences including American History and World History.
