Hello students and families! I am Teacher Darcie from Illinois in the U.S. I am so excited and eager to get to know you and your student on an individual level!

I am a recently (early) retired teacher with a rich background in all subject areas. I have a B.S. in elementary education with a minor in reading. I also have a Master's degree in reading (language). In addition, I am one class short of an ESL endorsement. In addition, I am TESOL certified. I taught two years in a first grade ESL classroom and have spent the last year tutoring students online ages 3-18.

Most of my experience has been in grades 1-3, however, I have taught grades 4 and 5 as well. In addition, I taught strictly reading to a variety of age levels as a reading specialist. I have also taught two years in a first grade ESL classroom teaching all subjects to students just acquiring English skills. Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to teach other educators best practices and data driven approaches in the teaching of reading and writing.

I am a passionate teacher who loves her students on a personal level. I am quick to recognize learning modalities, strengths and weaknesses, but more importantly, a student's passions and interests that are so vital in a student's learning. I am dedicated, enthusiastic, creative, nurturing, patient, innovative, positive, and driven to "teach like the world depends on it. "

I hope to meet with you soon so that, together, we can help your child develop into a passionate, life - long learner ! I look forward to speaking with you very soon !

I have had training in the teaching of common core math at the primary level. I have taken numerous courses, workshops, and have continued to read professionally. In the teaching of math, particularly in the primary grades, it is of utmost importan

Common Core,

Common Core

I have been teaching since the Common Core was adopted by the state of Illinois. It was developed by teachers and researchers working together with parents. The CC was structured based upon data provided from higher achieving states, other world leaders in education, and the knowledge of educational researchers. Its adaptation helps to prepare students to eventually be successful in college and/or careers particularly by focusing on the critical concepts and skills in the areas of language and math. Each grade level has a set of standards that are to be attained to properly prepare the student for the next grade level. The evidence-based standards used by Common Core still allow teachers flexibility in the presentation of these standards, but they also ensure that all students meet the goals for that particular grade level before passing to the next. The overall goal of common core is to prepare our students for the future by assuring they have received adequate skills and knowledge in the core subject areas.

I am an early retired veteran teacher of over 30 years teaching in grades 1-3 but also have experience teaching upper-grade students as well. I have a Master's degree as a reading specialist which allowed me to teach Title 1 reading to a variety of ages. Besides, I taught two years as a first grade ESL classroom teacher responsible for teaching all subject areas. I have one course left, and I will be fully certified as an ESL specialist. Also, I am TESOL certified. Most recently, I am teaching online English working with a variety of students ages 3-12. I have also had the opportunity to work with other educators as a speaker at several district workshops in which I presented best practices and data-driven approaches in the teaching of reading and language skills
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

As a primary teacher, using a hands-on approach to teaching math concepts is critical in order for students to grasp the concept behind the process. I utilize a variety of manipulative including counters, Unifix cubes, pattern blocks, and many more. I have many fun activities and "tricks of the trade" to help your student learn not just the concepts and skills but learn to love math ! I so look forward to hearing from you !
Reading,

Reading

I hold a master's degree in reading as a reading specialist. I am able to take running records to determine a student's instructional level. I am also able to analyze and determine what errors are being made and can work with you to determine content that is appropriate and of interest to your child. I teach students decoding skills side by side with comprehension skills and provide them with "tools" they can use while reading independently. I also tie in writing to reading as the two are intertwined . One helps promote the other. Tapping into a student's interests is key to helping develop these strategies as well as a love for reading which is needed in order to ensure that the strategies, concepts, etc.., are internalized. Together we can formulate an individualized plan for your child that will help him or her become life-long , confident, strategic, learners.
Spelling,

Spelling

In my classroom, we used the Rebecca Sitton approach to spelling , however, we combined it by research from Patricia Cunningham. Utilizing a "working word wall" combined with many "tricks of the trade" allowed my students to memorize and spell "tricky" sight words as well as learn the 37 rimes and how to use them to read and write other words. It also aides in their decoding when they begin to read longer, more complex words.

Writing

As reading and writing are interconnected, attaining a minor, a master's, and National Board Certification in reading allowed me to acquire knowledge and skills in teaching young and older children the skills good writers need to possess. The first is a love for writing. The second is using literature to connect writing with reading and providing a model for good writing skills. In my primary classroom, my students participated in writer's workshop in which they worked on different genres of writing progressing through the stages of the writing process including the final publishing of their writing. My students participated in peer editing and conferencing groups, had special writing folders with "tools" to assist them, and even had their published works displayed and shared with the principal! Reading and writing are my passion , and I strive to instill that flame in each of my students.

ADHD

ADHD

As a primary teacher of over 30 years teaching students ranging ages 2 through 18, I have had a variety of experience working with ADD/ADHD students as well as students with other needs . I participated in specific trainings that provided strategies, accommodations and positive approaches. Our district took part in district wide implementation of the PBIS approach which focuses on a positive intervention tier plan individualized to tailor to the student's unique needs. Some of the accommodations I use include: promoting a positive relationship with the student and parents, implementing a daily parent communication plan, providing lots of positive reinforcement, following a predictable routine, preparing for transitions, placing visual cues on desk and in the classroom, allowing movement and brain breaks, providing the student to have items such as a squishy ball, using a visual timer, providing a peer partner, breaking instructions into smaller steps, utilize hands on approaches, provide organizational tools, adapting assignments and testing situations, providing audiovisual support, ensuring the level of instruction is appropriate for the student, extending time limits, eliminating timed tests, and many other strategies that are individualized to fit the student's particular needs in a positive and nurturing manner.
