Knox College (English Secondary Ed)
Western Illinois University (Master's)
Hello! I am excited that you have chosen to view my profile for tutoring. I have a passion for helping students, especially in one-on-one settings. My teaching career began in 1996 when I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and Secondary Education from Knox College. I immediately took over a classroom for a teacher who went on maternity leave, and have been teaching ever since. In 2012, I earned my Master's Degree in English Literature & Language from Western Illinois University. During first half of my career, I was assigned mostly to classes with struggling learners. I've always had a heart for those kids who are really trying their best but still not meeting the requirements for success in their classes. I am experienced and comfortable working with students who have learning disabilities, ADHD, other health issues, or simply need a different approach to the materials they are trying to grasp.
My main philosophy in teaching is that every child can learn. It is a matter of finding the right method to reach that child. I am not one to quit when it comes to believing in a student's potential. I can help with all ages and all subjects, with specialties in reading comprehension, vocabulary, written expression, grammar, and test preparation.
I have 20 years of experience in teaching English and Language Arts (grades 6-12). I would also enjoy working with younger children if needed. I am current on state requirements and trends regarding Common Core, state testing, and general practices within the public school classroom. My license is a Type 09 Certified for 6-12 English and Language Arts, which includes being "highly qualified" to teach literature and writing of all genres.
Tutoring location will always be in a mutually agreed upon public place.
Parents or guardians are always welcome to attend the tutoring sessions.
Tutoring cost will be $45/hour; negotiations are possible in some circumstances.
Cancellation policy: If a session must be cancelled or rescheduled, please give notice at least 5 hours in advance.
I look forward to setting up a session with you soon! Hello! I am excited that you have chosen to view my profile for tutoring. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked extensively with ADD/ADHD students as a Title I reading assistant and within my own classroom. Most of my teaching career has been dedicated to students assigned to remedial and struggling learner settings. I have learned and practiced a range of methodologies to assist ADD/ADHD students succeed in and outside the classroom.
