About Dena

I first started tutoring English as a Second language (ESL) when I moved to South Korea in 2009. It began as a favor for a friend, but then I realized how fun and fulfilling it was. Since then, I have tutored people of all ages (elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as adults) in both one-on-one and group settings. I have also taught ESL in a classroom setting at a South Korean elementary school. Along with Korean students, I have worked with many refugees and immigrants here in the U.S. through organizations such as Bethany Christian Refugee Services. Besides teaching ESL directly, I have also worked with high school students that were English Language Learners, assisting them with homework in many different school subjects. I was also a consultant for my college's rhetoric center, working with college students on various forms of rhetoric, from writing to public speaking. I thoroughly enjoy proofreading and helping students think critically about their writing: that is, not simply "correcting" their writing, but enabling them to become better writers themselves. I graduated in 2013 with a BA in Linguistics and a minor in ESL, and I am currently taking classes with University of Wisconsin so that I can pursue my master's degree in Speech Language Pathology.

I am an avid traveler and language learner. I have visited twelve different countries on five different continents, and I have lived in the U.S., South Korea, and England. I used to be nearly fluent in Spanish, but then I moved to Korea and met my now husband (a Korean man), and learning Korean became a top priority! My Spanish is a little rusty now, but my Korean is nearly fluent. I hope to brush up on Spanish and continue studying Korean, and then maybe I can try picking up French, Italian, or Chinese. I am also interested in learning ASL. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, but have recently moved to West Michigan (where I went to college).

As mentioned previously, I have 5 years' experience teaching ESL in many various settings to people of many different ages and fluency levels. I find that because learning a second language can be very stressful for people (especially if they are studying other subjects in their second language), keeping study sessions light, fun, and interesting is essential. I have seen many English Language Learners (ELLs) cram for tests without actually absorbing information that they will need in the future, so I focus on reviewing past lessons and integrating previously learned material with current material. I also encourage my students to get involved in fun activities outside of school where they can use English in a stress-free environment, and give them specific suggestions regarding what activities may suit them best. As a language learner myself who has lived in a country where I did not speak the native language, I am also very empathetic to the stress and confusion that many ELLs in the U.S. deal with.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
