I am a teacher with 25 years experience ranging from preschool through 12th grade. I have worked with students with an IEP, at-risk students, average students, as well as high-achieving students. I am currently working as a high school special education teacher who co-teaches in the areas of English, PSAE prep, trig/advanced math, and geometry. I have specialized in reading as well. It is evident that I am flexible in the workplace as my administrators trust me to be a person who not only excels in whatever content I am assigned to teach, but can also work well with a variety of adults and students. Three years ago I was appointed as the head of my department, which entails working closely with administration to implement policy and to analyze data.
I enjoy working with youth as I find it both challenging and fulfilling. Students frequently seek me out during study hall periods in order to attain extra help with classwork. I find it very rewarding when a student experiences academic success through my expertise and encouragement. I believe rapport is an essential ingredient to student/teacher success; I am adept at building this relationship while keeping the focus on academic achievement. Jennifer gave me some very useful techniques to help improve my flute playing. She was very practical and had materials ready for me. She was very friendly and gave me tips that she uses. She was very helpful, and I would recommend her as a tutor for other flute players.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified in the state of Illinois through my licensure for K-9 all subjects. I graduated from DePaul University in 1989 with a BS in Elementary Education. I taught for 15 years at the elementary level prior to attaining my master's degree in special education.
I have been playing the flute since 4th grade (30+ years!!). I was always the leader of my section through high school. In college, I was competitive in wind ensemble with music majors although I was an elementary education major. After college, I taught private lessons from a music store as well as in private homes for many years (10+) until I needed more time to raise my four children. Now that they are more independent I would love to continue giving lessons.
I received my Master's degree in learning disabilities from Northeastern Illinois University in 1994. Since then, I have taught in a variety of settings from 6th grade through seniors in high school. I have worked mainly with students with learning disabilities and emotional and behavioral issues. I currently teach in the high school setting, am the head of my department, and work both in a self-contained setting as well as in the mainstream classes as a co-teacher.
