About Barb

Hello, interested parent or student! Here is a bit about me to help you get to know me better.

First, my background. I have an Associate Degree in General Science and have worked in various accounting positions for ten years. I have always done well in math, science, English, and writing.

Over the past 25 years, I have volunteered many, many hours as a tutor in public schools, for all the grades. For the past 13 years, I've been a home school teacher, also for all the grades. During this time, I founded and ran a home school co-op for 45 students for five years. For this co-op and others, I have taught classes for elementary students in mixed sciences, art, English, poetry, and more, with class sizes up to fifteen students. I also taught co-op classes for high school students in biology, chemistry, physics, ACT/PSAT/SAT prep, English, literature, writing, rhetoric, and more.

When it was time for me to find a job, I thought about what I was skilled at and loved, and so I became a paid individual tutor & co-op class teacher. I have since worked with students in pre-algebra through college algebra, English grammar, writing, science, and ACT/SAT/PSAT Prep.

I'm happy to say that I have helped all of my ACT test prep students raise their scores by at least two points overall; several have increased their overall scores by 6 points. Individual section scores have increased as much as 10 points! I am proud of all of my students and glad to help them perform their personal bests. I have students starting with ACT scores from 13 - 30, so I'm comfortable tutoring them no matter what their starting point. I recently took the ACT and scored a 34 overall.

Next, what I can do for you and your student? I offer individual tutoring sessions, weekly, bi-weekly, or on an as-needed basis, or group classes/tutoring sessions; minimum of four students per group. I can help you find curriculum that will fit your student's needs, as well as do the set-up/planning for classes I will l be tutoring your student in. I am also available to do your grading/record-keeping for classes I will be tutoring your student in. Fees for this are generally one hour extra per month for each service - set-up/planning or grading/record-keeping.

Finally, a few words about my teaching style. I love working with high school students. I particularly love math, science, English, and ACT/SAT Test Prep, with chemistry being my first love and algebra my second. Tutoring and teaching math for over 25 years has helped me learn many different ways of explaining concepts and problem solving methods. All my students tell me I am the best math teacher ever. I feel that everyone has an innate ability to understand math and many other subjects when presented in a way that makes sense to them. I have a lot of patience and don't jump in to do the work for the students; I look for the way that makes sense to them. My motto is "Why do more math than necessary", both in math and science, and I show students shortcuts and easier ways to accomplish more in less time. I don't spend time on concepts they already understand.

The ACT/PSAT/SAT math sections are extremely limited in time, so I teach the students to look for a quick way to solve the problems and not just reach for the paper/calculator. Also, I am very firm on learning basic skills - I ask the students to use flashcards for simple math facts and to keep note cards for all of the math formulas they need at their level. I integrate memorization skills and explain to them why it is important to learn certain things. All in all, I've been tutoring for free for over 25 years, and paid for the past several. When I needed to find a job, this was what God put in my lap, and it's been a pleasure ever since. I strive to be more than just a source of information, but a source of positive support and influence in the students' lives. I enjoy every day and every student, and I hope to help students improve their skills and enjoy their learning as much as possible.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I am happy to schedule an initial consultation to see what your needs are and how I would be able to meet them. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am qualified to tutor all of the ACT sections; although this job specified just the English. I have been a home school teacher for 14 years and have had great success helping students improve in all areas of the ACT. I have also been a volunteer &/or paid tutor in reading, English, math, science, and ACT/PSAT/SAT prep for over 20 years. I am a firm believer in the value of the ACT, as it is quite literally a ticket to college entry and scholarship money. A student's time is much better spent prepping for the test than working to earn money for college, as the ACT score can earn you thousands and tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarships. I would love to help you maximize your ACT score!

ACT Math

I have been teaching skills for the ACT math section for the past ten years, with much more student time over the past three years. I am confident that I will be able to help you improve your skills and prepare for the tests in your future and I look forward to helping you succeed.

ACT Reading

I have had experience over the past ten years with ACT test prep, in all areas of the test. I have taught formal classes and individual students for the past three years. I have had great success with my students. I am completely confident that I will be able to help you improve your skills and prepare for the tests in your future.

ACT Science

I have had experience over the past ten years with ACT test prep, in all areas of the test. I have taught formal classes and individual students for the past three years. I have had great success with my students. I am completely confident that I will be able to help you improve your skills and prepare for the tests in your future. The science section is particularly difficult as it does not test science, as its title would suggest. There are some tricks to succeeding on this section, whether or not science is a good subject for you, and I’ll be happy to talk with you more about this if you like.

Algebra 1

I have had experience over the past ten years with high school and college math, including Algebra 1, 2, Trig, Geometry, Pre-Calc, and more. My degree in general science had a heavy math component. I also do a lot of tutoring and teaching ACT prep classes, so I definitely have the experience and interest to help you.
Good luck!

Algebra 2

I have had experience over the past ten years with high school and college math, including Algebra 1, 2, Trig, Geometry, Pre-Calc, and more. My degree in general science had a heavy math component. I also do a lot of tutoring and teaching ACT prep classes, so I definitely have the experience and interest to help you.
Good luck!

Chemistry

Qualifications for chemistry tutoring include 3 years of tutoring students in high school chemistry, as well as many years of tutoring math, which is a major component of chemistry. I have an Associate’s Degree in general science, which means that I did take a great deal of chemistry, as well as the other natural sciences, in college. Last year I taught high school chemistry to a class of 14 students for a home school co-op. Chemistry is my first love, math is my second, and I will enthusiastically share my love for this subject area and help students succeed.

English

I have been teaching English and reading for over 12 years and have had much experience with reading comprehension, essay writing, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. I have also had great success in tutoring for the English and reading sections of the ACT, PSAT, and SAT. I enjoy working with students and watching them improve.

Geometry

I have had experience over the past ten years with high school and college math, including Geometry.

Literature

Literature Qualifications:

I have taught English and Literature to students of all grades, but my primary focus over the past ten years has been on 7th – 12th grade. I teach homeschool co-op and private classes, as well as tutor individual students. I enjoy helping students study critically to learn about the deeper meanings of the writing. Learning to see and think about the elements of the writing such as theme, setting, plot, conflict, and more can be examined to help bring a literary work to life. As a large part of my tutoring is ACT prep, I will also keep that in mind and help the students learn to read more effectively.

Physical Science

I have previously taught and privately tutored students in all of the high school science courses, including physical and general science, biology, chemistry, and physics, in addition to junior high classes in botany, general science, chemistry & physical science. I have an Associate’s degree in general science. My high level of experience in math tutoring/teaching is very important, as there is much math in most of the science areas. I enjoy teaching science and look forward to helping your student succeed.

Reading

Reading: I have been teaching reading to various aged students for over twenty years. I currently have a number of students working on reading comprehension and I teach classes in ACT/SAT/PSAT Prep, which has a heavy emphasis on reading comprehension, vocabulary, speed, active reading, and other reading-related skill building. I look forward to helping your student become a more effective reader.

SAT Math

I am qualified by experience as well as education to tutor all of the SAT section. I have been a home school teacher for 14 years and have had great success helping students improve in all areas of the SAT. I have also been a volunteer &/or paid tutor in reading, English, math, science, and ACT/PSAT/SAT prep for over 20 years. I have had great success with my students and I teach them to look for a quick way to solve the problems. I utilize their time wisely, structuring to improve in the areas and ways that offer the best potential benefit for their time. I make sure they know key facts about how the test is structured, as well as memorize key formulas that will make the math section go much more quickly.

I am a firm believer in the value succeeding on the SAT, as it is quite literally a ticket to college entry and scholarship money. A student's time is much better spent prepping for the test than working to earn money for college, as the SAT score can earn you thousands and tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarships. I would love to help you maximize your score!

SAT Reading

I have had experience over the past ten years with high school English and ACT/PSAT/SAT test prep, and have taught formal classes for the past three years. I have had great success with my students. I am completely confident that I will be able to help you improve your skills and prepare for the tests in your future.

Writing

I have spent a great deal of time working with high school students doing English courses - both grammar and writing. In addition, I have taught groups of students writing skills, and I have a number of students who see me for writing essays and research papers. Additionally, I have much experience teaching students to write essays for the SAT and ACT. I enjoy helping students find their ability to express themselves skillfully through writing, which is a vital, life-long skill.
