University of Chicago
Northwestern University Evanston, Illinois (Master's)
In June of 2006, I completed my undergraduate work at the University of Chicago, where I majored in history and closely worked with some of the top professors in the department. Then in August of 2009, I graduated from Northwestern University with a 3.94 GPA, earning both my master's degree in education and my Type 09 Illinois Teaching Certificate.
My most recent position was working as a high school social studies teacher in Kuwait, where I gained a lot of valuable experience working with ELL students (and learned a lot about the Middle East!). Before that, I taught college-level and continuing education students at Northwestern College in Chicago. And finally, I've also worked as a private tutor, which has given me a terrific sense for how wonderfully productive working one-on-one can be.
I seem to gravitate toward teaching in one way or another, simply because I have a genuine love of helping others learn and grow, and I think you can easily find that in my work. It is worth noting that I am extremely keen at being able to tell when someone genuinely understands something, and when they're just telling me what "the right answer" is. When I work with my students, I know I have done my job only when they can teach the material back to me. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
From 2005-2009, I worked as a private piano tutor, giving lessons to students of all ages (child to adult) and skill levels (beginner to advanced). I am adept at working with students in whatever genre interests them, from classical to ragtime to show tunes to popular music, I have had experience with just about every major one.
