Hello! I'm Ray, a PhD student in theoretical chemistry at Northwestern University. I graduated with highest honors from UC Berkeley with a BS in Chemical Engineering. My work lies at the intersection of math, physics, and chemistry.

With more than five years' teaching experience at both the high school and college levels, I am comfortable teaching mathematics and the physical sciences, as well as helping students prepare for standardized testing, like the SAT, ACT, or GRE. I have taught both privately and as part of institutionalized programs, one-on-one, in small groups, and, most recently, in a classroom setting for a general chemistry course. As a teaching assistant, I guided two sections of about 20 students each through self-designed worksheets meant to review and expand upon key concepts over the course of ten weeks. Writing, problem set, and lesson samples are available upon request.

I firmly believe that everyone can succeed in technical coursework: what is required is not innate ability but rather a shift in mindset, not mechanical regurgitation but rather an appreciation for the physical mechanisms and principles at play. My problem-oriented tutoring style is designed to help you internalize these principles and amass experience in tackling a variety of progressively harder questions. I will teach at your level. If you're struggling, I can help you get better by shoring up your foundations. If you're excelling, I can provide guidance on more advanced subjects that you might be interested in.

I am capable of teaching math, chemistry, and physics courses at the high school and college levels, with significant experience in the calculus sequence, linear algebra, physical chemistry, classical mechanics, and statistical physics. I have particular expertise in science and math olympiads at the high school level, having been first alternate for the USA team in the International Chemistry Olympiad, as well as a participant in the AIME and in the invitational round of the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad.

I like board games, integrals, and small, furry creatures like spiders. I dislike Calibri and Verdana.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Ray helped my son work in his chemistry homework. He was knowledgeable and patient and my son thought he was helpful. He arrived to the library early and reserved a study room and started right away when my son got there. Thanks.
