When I worked at a corporate job, Cassandra, the junior secretary in my department asked if I would teach her Excel. Her senior co-worker asked, “Why would you even bother? She’s hopeless.” With my help and persistence, Cassandra learned Excel, and used it to get a better-paying job. My role as a tutor is to bring out the best in a student: to build confidence and well as skills, to help the student find his or her way around any mental blocks with examples, analogies, illustrations, etc. I get a charge out of the moments when “the lightbulb goes on”: when students see what they weren’t seeing before.

I was a straight-A math student from beginning arithmetic to Calculus, Probability, and Matrix Algebra. Math came easy for me, but I know it doesn’t for many. I am a retired data analyst and consultant, but I’ve always enjoyed teaching. In my career, I developed ways to explain mathematical concepts to different kinds of learners (ranging from secretaries to CEOs). I’ve helped math-phobic friends do well on their LSATs and GMATs, and logged many hours tutoring my daughter through high school algebra, geometry, and calculus, and then the ACT (she told me to write that). More recently, I tutor students from second grade through junior college, including children at a community center on Chicago’s South Side, and am the treasurer of a national non-profit organization. I know how to use online tools and apps like Geogebra and Wolfram. I’m patient, positive, and deliberate, making sure my students fully understand the building blocks of math and logical reasoning, and know ways of parsing problems so that they reach the right answer quickly and confidently.

Math SAT 780, Math Level II Achievement 790, 24 years using Excel daily, Graduate School Statistics minor. My GMAT score is no longer available, but I got into and attended the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

I want to help you whether you just need to get through a requirement or intend to get a Ph.D. someday. I hope we can work together.
