Northwestern University (Social Policy)
I am currently a student in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern. I love to learn and I want to spread my love of learning with children. I have three years of experience tutoring elementary school aged children. I have tutored math, reading, spelling, and I have worked with children learning English as a second language.
I love working with kids of all different skill levels and want to get to know each child on a personal level in order to work with them more effectively. Every child learns differently and I want to figure out the best learning style for each of my students so that they can get the most out of our sessions.
I have tutored kids grades 1-5 in basic math concepts for the past 3 years. I was trained by the Boys and Girls Club on how to teach elementary level math and have a variety of techniques for making math fun and understandable. I want kids to understand the importance of math, and I like to do so through hands-on activities. I am also happy to assist kids in homework/basic test prep.
I have taught reading to kids grades 1-5 for the past 3 years. I have done a lot of one-on-one reading help for kids that are learning English as a second language. I want kids to not only learn to read but to develop a love for reading.
There is so much development that occurs for children in elementary school. They will carry the techniques, skills and attitudes that they develop in elementary school with them for the rest of their lives. I'd like to help them develop these skills; whether it be study skills, organization, spelling, reading, math, etc so that they can continue their education with a set of strong base skills.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored children at the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula in a variety of subjects for the last 4 years. They are primarily struggling students that go to the Club for academic support. I went through the training and certification process that the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula requires. I have tutored spelling for a third grader outside of the Boys and Girls Club as well. I try to keep kids engaged by helping them learn through activities like doing their work in chalk, learning math facts while jumping rope, playing scrabble to learn spelling, etc. I am currently in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern and have an interest in education.
Many of the kids that I worked with at the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula struggled with study skills. Every kid studies differently so you have to watch the kid learn before teaching them study skills. I like to work with kids in other skills before beginning to teach them how to study. In order to find out what kind of a learner a kid is one can try out different techniques such as word repetition, visuals, sigh exercises, etc to see what works. From there I would proceed to expand on teaching them the basics of that skill. I went through the training and certification process that the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula requires. I worked with a third grader for the past academic year on how to study spelling words. She was a very kinetic learner so we studied by writing things in chalk, making words with scrabble tiles, etc. I am currently in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern and have an interest in education.
