As a certified teacher with seventeen years of experience in public school classrooms (fourth grade and sixth grade), I've turned many students into mathematics rock stars! Will you be next? Because I've worked with many different students with many unique ways of learning, I've developed many strategies for teaching math, and I would be honored to help you by finding which method works for YOU.
I know, I know math can be a real pain! But maybe, just maybe, all you need is someone who can break the problem down into tiny little steps or help you with the math vocabulary...or show you the steps in three different ways...or turn the topic into a game or activity so that something boring becomes something fun.
Are any of these topics tripping you up? If so, I've taught hundred and hundreds of kids how to master them, and I can teach you too!
Do you need help with fractions, decimals, and percents? I can show you how to change from one form to another, and I can help you add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals. If you are studying geometry, I can help you with area, perimeter, circumference, and volume formulas (I LOVE teaching formulas!) and with angles in triangles and quadrilaterals. If you are struggling with measurement, I can show you an easy-peasy way to convert from one unit to another. We can also work on all operations with integers (like multiplying negative and positive numbers), as well as regular operations like long division (I promise I will help you understand it!).
Ratios, rates, and proportions can be confusing and we will will work on those for sure! We can also work on data such as graphs and the information you get from them (mean, median, mode, range). There are many other topics you may need help with, and I am ready to help you succeed.
If math class makes you feel nervous, frustrated, or just plain scared, let me help you discover your inner mathematics rock star.
For every math topic, there are several ways to present it, and I will work until I find the way that works for you. I like games and activities and anything else that it takes to get you to where you need to be in your math knowledge.
At the beginning of my career I taught language arts and discovered that I am a huge grammar and vocabulary nerd! If you need help revising your paper (with strategies to help you find your own mistakes), working on your grammar homework, or learning your vocabulary words, I can help.
I love teaching elementary and middle school students, and in addition to working with students during the school day, I have tutored my students after school and on Saturdays during our school-wide Saturday tutorials. I am well equipped to help you achieve your academic goals and to gain confidence, satisfaction, and joy from hard work and a job well done.
Oh, wait...You wanted to be an actual rock star? You're always tapping on your desk with your pencil or playing air drums? Well, I think it's time that you took some drum lessons. In addition to teaching math, I also taught a drumming class and a drumming club at my school. The students went from knowing NOTHING about playing drums to performing in front of the whole auditorium.
Like I did with them, we will start with the basics of counting music, understanding notes, using proper sticking, playing patterns, learning fills, and keeping steady time. Then we will start listening to your favorite music and applying everything you've learned to real songs. Before you know it, you'll be rocking out on the kit! If your parents say drums are too loud (they're right) or too expensive (right again), tell them that all you need to begin is a practice pad and some sticks, which you can get for around $30 total at a music store. Then, if you want to pursue the drums, you can invest in a reasonably-priced drum-kit and quiet pads (so everyone in your house does not get mad at you when you're having fun playing). I've played drums for twelve years, and I played at church for the past eight years. It's one of my very favorite things to do in the whole wide world, and if you think it might become one of your favorite things too, then contact me and let's get you started on your musical journey.
If you have gotten your progress report or report card and you feel like you want to improve your grades, or if you need help preparing for an upcoming test, or if you need some extra practice because the work just doesn't make sense, contact me so we can get you on track to reach your goals (please let me know the specific topic(s) you need help with so I can prep in advance of meeting you. I want you to get the most out of our lesson time). I am available to come to your home or to meet you at the local library or at a coffee shop. I look forward to meeting you and watching you make some incredible progress in math, language, or the drums.
PS I hope you like stickers because I do and I'm bringing them to our lesson to reward you for all the outstanding work you're going to do. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took private drum lessons for several years, and I have been playing at churches ever since (twelve years experience total). I played in a band called The Loving Ones, which played in venues around Houston. I also played drums during the worship service of Houston's First Baptist Church for a congregation of approximately 2000+ people. I then played for the service at Wordserve Church in Fulshear, Texas for seven years. In addition, I have played for other events and have subbed for drummers at other churches.
At the middle school where I taught, I taught a drumming club for two years, and I also taught an all-girls drumming class. I wrote the entire year-long curriculum and prepared my students to perform at the talent show and many other events.
I have a degree in elementary education from Baylor University, and I am a Texas-certified teacher with seventeen years of full-time teaching experience in public school classrooms. I taught all subjects to fourth graders for five years, and I taught sixth-grade math for the past nine years. Through my school I tutored countless students before and after school and during our Saturday tutorial program.
