About Mary

I graduated from University of Illinois with both of my bachelor's and master's in Accountancy. I was a teaching assistant for a year during grad school, teaching sophomore students introductory accounting. I'm very passionate in teaching and take pride in seeing improvements in students' grade or increased level of confidence in the subject. I also tutored calculus and some business computer science for two years during college. After graduation from school, I started my career as a consultant at one of the Big Four public accounting firms and worked there for two years. Recently I just made a move from public accounting to regular industry and currently working as an internal auditor and compliance consultant. Now with more balance in life, I'm ready to resume tutoring. I'm confident in teaching accounting, elementary/middle school mathematics and mandarin (all four skills for beginners and advanced learners).

I have always been acing my math classes from elementary school all the way to college with calculus. During entire college as an accounting major, mathematics has always been a major skill that's constantly utilized. Therefore, I'm confident that I can teach elementary and middle school mathematics with no difficulties.

As a native Chinese speaker, I'm fluent in Chinese writing, speaking, listening and reading. And I have always been proud in helping others learn this beautiful, historical yet complex language. I've taught babies, middle schoolers and adults and have different strategies when dealing with different groups. For little babies, I just played games with them and pointed to colorful toys or items with their Chinese names. With middle schoolers, I helped with their Chinese lessons at school, helped them make sentences, and designed themed discussions that introduced them to Chinese culture, new vocabulary and sentence structures. With adults, I designed more structured lesson plans and introduced them topics depending on their learning purposes. I'm confident that I can help whoever is interested in learning and understanding Chinese achieve their goals.

I took TOEFL in high school with a score of 108 and in college with a score of 114. I'm familiar with the way the questions are structured

As said in my profile, I obtained my bachelor's and master's in accounting, have tutored in both introductory and intermediate accounting, and have taught introductory accounting lessons to a total of roughly 150 students in my own sessions and held multiple review session with more than 200 students in audience. I'm very familiar with the topics and know how to deliver effective classes to help students learn the concepts and advance in their classes. I also have passed my CPA exams and obtained my license in 2015, one year into my career.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
