About Timothy

I have a PhD in English and World Literature, as well as a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, both from the University of Iowa. I am also a published writer of both fiction and nonfiction. After six years as a full-time college teacher (at Grinnell College, the University of California at Riverside, and Vanderbilt), I became a professional writer and editor for educational publishers such as Houghton Mifflin and McGraw-Hill.

I believe that one thing that often goes wrong in the classroom is that teachers, who are professionals in their fields and love what they do, teach students as if they were young professionals in the making. However, most students are not planning to becomes professionals in the subjects they need help with. Their learning needs are different from those of budding professionals. Such students are not motivated by love for the subject; they need to know why it matters.

I also believe that the best analogy for the student/teacher relationship is that of athlete and coach. I can teach you and encourage you, but only you can bring home the gold.

Personality wise, I am easy-going, patient, and flexible, but I take what I do seriously and aim to do it as well as I possibly can.

I have six years of experience as a full-time college teacher of reading, literature, writing, and critical thinking (on top of an additional six as a graduate instructor). Additionally I have more than a decade of experience as a full-time editor of high-school English/Language Arts textbooks and online programs that integrate reading, literature, writing, and critical thinking to meet Common Core State Standards.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch and ask me questions to see if we might be a good match. Let me know what you want to learn or accomplish, why you want that, and what (if anything) is holding you back. I will give you an honest appraisal of whether I think I can help you. I may also suggest some learning strategies or approaches for accomplishing your goals, whether with me or with someone else.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a humanities doctorate with a special focus on English and world literature as well as a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing. I have taught literature and composition at the University of Iowa, Grinnell College, The University of California at Riverside, and Vanderbilt University. Additionally I have more than a decade of experience as a writer and editor of middle- and high-school literature, writing, and grammar textbooks and online programs for educational publishers such as Houghton-Mifflin and McGraw-Hill.

German

I have taught German reading, writing, and speaking (including lecturing in German) at the University of Iowa, the University of California at Riverside, and Vanderbilt University. My most recent teaching job was at the Chicago Waldorf School. I have near-native fluency and flawless pronunciation.

Grammar

I have a humanities doctorate with a special focus on English and world literature as well as a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing. I have taught literature, grammar, and composition at the University of Iowa, Grinnell College, The University of California at Riverside, and Vanderbilt University. Additionally I have more than a decade of experience as a writer and editor of middle- and high-school literature, writing, and grammar textbooks and online programs for educational publishers such as Houghton-Mifflin and McGraw-Hill.

Additionally I have more than a decade of experience as a writer and editor of middle- and high-school literature, writing, and grammar textbooks and online programs for educational publishers such as Houghton-Mifflin and McGraw-Hill.

Philosophy

I have an interdisciplinary humanities doctorate, with philosophy as one of three areas of concentration. My specialization was in aesthetic philosophy. I have published scholarly essays on philosophical topics, for example, a critical review of John Sallis's book Delimitations. Perhaps even more important than my ability to work with high-level philosophical texts is my ability to present and discuss them in nontechnical language. The latter is the result of twelve years' experience as a college teacher of required humanities electives with students majoring in other subjects.

Proofreading

I taught freshman composition, including proofreading, at the college level for ten years. Additionally, I have worked more than a decade as a writer, editor, and proofreader in educational publishing. One thing I am especially good at is spotting patterns of proofreading errors by a particular student or author. Focusing in on a particular kind of error--for example, not using capital letters when they are needed--is a great way to improve one's proofreading skills quickly and dramatically with relatively little effort.

Reading
