About Eunice

Bio

Teaching has always been something I've been passionate about. Helping people get to that "aha!" moment is one of the most rewarding things for me--it feels good knowing that someone has had a breakthrough in how they see the world around them, even for something as simple as words and numbers on a page. I truly mean it when I say my style of teaching is student-centered. I hold students responsible for explaining their work and choices. My motto is that you can only claim to know something...

My motto is that you can only claim to know something if you can put it in to your own words!

More traditional approaches to teaching math have been to simply employ rote memorization and to provide students with formulas and patterns without context, with no regards to teaching students why these patterns exist or how these formulas came to be (or even why they're important). I've never been a big fan of this style of teaching math—I liken it to teaching a piano student how to play a particular song by showing them which keys to press, but not actually teaching them the names of the notes or how to even read sheet music!

My methods of teaching place the student at the forefront of their own learning. Using questions and guided instruction, I lead them to discover the material for themselves. I don't provide students directly with answers, and I don't just tell students that a concept works—I make sure they understand why and how it works. I use prompting to shape the way they think about the material in ways that are natural and personal, and instill the proper tools and skills in a student to make sure that they can continue to learn and problem-solve on their own when I'm not there.

I have previous experience as both a private tutor and in more formal classroom settings. My work experience in the classroom has been as both a substitute teacher for various subjects, and as an AVID program tutor/teacher assistant, the latter of which was very student focused, so I am used to working one-on-one with people. I am comfortable teaching students of all grade and age levels, and am proficient in most math subjects, ranging from elementary and up to calculus, as well as more specific branches like linear and abstract algebra, finite math, and trigonometry.

I am a friendly person, patient, and above all, interested in your success. I look forward to hearing from you!
