About Janine

I am a veteran, fifteen year high school English teacher. Throughout my career I taught every grade and level, most recently having taught AP English Literature and Composition (British and American Lit), Junior English Honors (American Literature), and Creative Writing. I am also certified to teach AP Language and Composition, although I have never formally taught this course. At my school I participated in the revision of the AP Literature course as well as the Writing course. Because of my unique approach, employing many exercises that reach beyond just formal "test prep", my AP students, for example, scored above average on the AP Literature test every year I taught the class. My Juniors have also expressed great growth both as writers and readers.

My classroom was balanced on the tenets of both creativity and logic, with many of the lessons I created as well of the strategies shared meeting both these standards. By scaffolding skills, teaching critical/close reading, deconstructing vocabulary, using mentor texts, my students were prepared to not only perform well on standardized tests but to also communicate through writing and discussion the evidence and motive behind their thinking. Whatever questions drive the learning are the answers we seek. I thoroughly enjoy working one-on-one with students and have a great appreciation for the direct communication and time it grants. Pacing and piecing are part of the puzzle that is education, and one-on-one teaching admires this truth.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taught all grades in high school so my experience with the grammatical components of the English section of the ACT are layered. I have also taught Juniors for many years, so i have much experience with this age group. I also find that through working on writing many of the questions asked in the ACT English portion of the test become easier. Since the English section focuses on skills such as grammar, syntax, structure, sometimes the holistic approach to writing turns on the light bulb. I am open to both traditional test prep work as well as more holistic practices.

English

For fifteen years, I taught English Literature and Writing to high school students. Many, if not all, of my lessons combined the need to balance analysis and creativity, with the final outcome seen in a variety of forms: quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, writing. A desire to impart the power of working with both sides of our brain is also part of my philosophy, and my goal is to help students achieve this balance. Whether students need guidance with literal vocabulary, or help with the more abstract puzzling of ideas, my lessons and my teaching honor the fluidity of communication that drives and appreciates both reading and writing.

Literature

Not only was I an English major at Denison U, I also have Graduate school experience with DePaul University and Columbia College which has provided me with a vast repertoire of texts; beginning in January 2016 I will also be taking Literature courses at Northwestern University. As an AP Lit. teacher (as well an American Lit. teacher) I believed it was my duty to provide students with exposure to the varying voices and volumes that have made up our literary worlds. Students practiced the art of close reading, mimesis, analysis in order to honor the beauty of story in works ranging from Mark Twain to Toni Morrison to the Romantic Poets to Franz Kafka. Literature is also used as a cornerstone to help students develop their own sophisticated and authentic writing.

Study Skills

Study Skills is a vast concept, and often one that just needs a little guidance. Some of the Study Skills that I teach and encourage are developing organizational habits that keep the To-Do List fluid; guiding annotation to help focus the content; modeling structure to help a piece of writing gain cohesion; exploring various note-taking strategies and learning how to review these notes to make them stick. It is reading and writing, and like Benjamin Franklin suggests in his "Moral Perfection" essay, it is learning how to further one's strengths and embrace one's weaknesses through preparation and goals, and reworking the reflection until it's habit.
