About Marianne

I have twenty years of teaching experience in special education. I graduated from Illinois State University with two certifications as a learning behavior specialist and blind and visually impaired. In addition to that, I am certified to teach elementary. In the last two years, I have taught on the North Shore and taken all kinds of exciting workshops such as Teaching Like a Champion. I am up to date and current in my field and love teaching children and watching them learn.

I am a certified teacher who has taught in the public schools. I am certified to teach all academic subjects ages kindergarten through twelfth grade. I love children of all ages and am highly engaging, energetic and motivating. I have a great sense of humor, am very patient and kind. I am highly creative and make learning tons of fun.

I have taught in the elementary, middle and high school levels. I have taught fourth, fifth and sixth grade. I have also taught eighth grade and high school. The subjects I taught in the classroom are reading, math and language arts, science, and social studies.

I also have worked with students with learning disabilities, autism, blindness and ADD. I have taught students study skills, organization, how to study for tests and mneumonic tricks to remember things. I know Braille and have six years experience working with blind students. I know how to use the Braille note which is a Braille computer for the blind.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am certified as a Learning Behavior Specialist which is a teacher who works with students with learning disabilities and behavior disorders. I taught this for 14 years in the public schools. I have worked with ADD/ADHD students who had IEP's and 504 plans in special education. I am a certified special education teacher. I have been trained in techniques for ADD students.

Autism

As a certified special education teacher I have worked with students with autism in my classroom for several years in my 20 years of teaching as a Learning Behavior Specialist. I have written behavior management plans and functional assessments of behavior for students with autism. I have worked directly with an autistic child in 5th grade last year in written expression and on writing assignments.

Braille

I am a certified teacher of the visually impaired and took Braille in college. I have taught visually impaired and blind students for 6 years. In the last 2 years I have taught a student Braille and also used a Braille note computer to teach it. I recently took a refresher class on Braille Math at Hadley School for the Blind.

Career Development

I am certified as a business coach and have written resumes for people. I took my courses at Advantage Coaching and Training in Naperville. I learned career projection exercises and goal setting exercises. I have helped coach a woman who was out of work to find a job and also how to study for her PMP exam and pass it.

Dyslexia

I worked with students with learning disabilities for 20 years in the public school system. I am a certified special education teacher. I am certified as a Learning Behavior Specialist. I have used specialized reading programs such as the Wilson Reading program. I have also taught young children in kindergarten hands on methods of learning their letters of the alphabet. Some of these methods include using sand to write their letters in or shaving cream or pudding to trace their letters with.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught in the public schools for 20 years ages k-8th grade. As a special education teacher I have co-taught reading, math and language for 4th and 5th and 6th and 8th grade students recently. I have attended many teacher workshops 125 hours every 5 years to get my certificate renewed and keep it up to date.

Nutrition

I have taught Science at the 4th-6th grade level. I am also a nutrition addict and studied it extensively on my own as I have a personal interest in vitamins and being healthy. I have read a lot of articles in magazines and journals on the subject.

Special Needs

I have 20 years of teaching experience in special education. I am certified in two areas. I am certified to teach the Blind and also as a Learning Behavior Specialist or LBS1. I am certified by the state of Illinois and have been currently teaching in the public school system. Last year I attended many current workshops on students with special needs in Wilmette School District 39 where I taught full time.

Study Skills

As a special education teacher one of my main roles was to teach my students organizational and study habits. I taught students with learning disabilities for 14 years.
