About April

I grew up in Wisconsin as a small town girl just waiting to head out into the world. I was always fascinated by other languages, cultures, and people. It was in high school that I first started to explore these fascinations in new ways. I traveled to Mexico, and then I began tutoring in an after school program for ESL students struggling with their classwork. I met a young boy named Manuel, and knew that it was my purpose in life to help others learn English so they could have access to more and to better opportunities.

I continued my education at Southwest Baptist University where I majored in English Education. In addition, I took many classes in TESOL and Intercultural communications to improve my ability to interact with a wide variety of people. I traveled to Greece and to Senegal and spent a lot of time working with students on Visa in the US who were trying to improve their English skills. After my student teaching, I fell in love with the purpose that I felt in helping others reach their goals and accomplish their dreams by improving their English and reading skills.

After I graduated, I was accepted to an organization called Teach For America as one of the 5,300 candidates out of 45,000 applicants. I obtained my Illinois teaching certification for ELA and taught remedial English and Literature in some of the toughest neighborhoods of Chicago. In these places and through TFA, I received extra professional development and 2 years of experience in which I tutored individuals and groups in addition to full-class instruction. I love tutoring because it is simply what I am called to do in laugh. Without all the bells and whistles, I just love working with people, and I love encouraging others to become life-long learners as they figure out what their calling is.

I specialize in tutoring for all things that involve English: ACT English and Reading, ESL, Literature (American and British), Grammar, and Writing (fiction and non-fiction). English is my passion (you'll see when we meet).
In my tutoring sessions we will first discuss and set goals, and I will give a pre-assessment in whatever subject or area you need most help in; this will help me discover where you need growth and aid me in preparing you to reach your goals. In addition, I will provide a challenging and encouraging environment for our sessions. You can expect to have homework and periodic assessments so we can quantitatively figure out what we need to do to reach your goals.

I am available for tutoring on Monday-Saturday from 7:00AM to 7:00PM. We can meet in a public place, online, or work out another arrangement. My base rate is $40 an hour for in person lessons and $25 an hour for online tutoring.

I seriously cannot wait to meet you! Please contact me and schedule a lesson, you will not regret it!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am qualified to teach ESL as a result of my time overseas in different contexts in which I had practice teaching ESL. In addition, I have had experience tutoring young children (Greek and Hispanic) to learn English and have seen amazing results from the direct method and from total physical response. During my college years, I also took classes in TESOL for this purpose.

Grammar

In addition to speaking/writing/reading English as my native language, I have extensive knowledge of English grammar. Having graduated with a degree in English Education, it was compulsory to take grammar classes in college. I have now taught Composition/English Grammar as an entire class for a year.

Literature

I have a vast knowledge of American and British Literature and I am familiar with other famous works as well. I have taught Literature for two years.

Proofreading

Having taught high school English for two years, I have an extensive amount of experience in proofreading and editing. I am talented at identifying errors and point to the correct answer without giving the student what to say. I have assigned and graded hundreds of papers from 3rd grade to college level quality. This is in addition to my degree which included classes on how to write and assess formal writing.

Reading

I am an avid reader. In addition to being an avid reader for my entire life, I also graduated with a degree in English Education, having taken many courses on reading and teaching reading. Finally, I have accumulated experiences with teaching reading for the last two years and have gained techniques to improve comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and analysis.

Vocabulary

I have avid reading aids in adding vocabulary to your understanding and application. I have been an avid reader of up to college level texts which include archaic vocabulary necessary to understanding the text. Adding vocabulary can introduce students to new levels of reading and writing. To this end, I include vocabulary in all the areas of expertise that I possess.

Writing

Writing is a skill that is tied to reading, vocabulary, and grammar. Graduating with a degree in English Education, I took classes in composition and in teaching writing. In addition to this, I have had experience teaching a class dedicated to English grammar and writing techniques of which I have used a plethora.
