I relocated to Illinois after having taught/tutored in Texas, northern Virginia and Massachusetts. My teaching and tutoring experiences have included teaching math at the elementary, middle school and college levels and the instruction has ranged from traditional math to accelerated math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1, Part 1. I have worked with upper elementary/intermediate students (fifth and sixth graders), middle school/junior high students and adults. My specialization includes teaching Pre-Algebra at the middle school level and Developmental Math up to Algebra 1, Part 1 at the Junior College level.

I have been teaching and/or tutoring middle grades math (4th - 8th grade) and Pre-Algebra for 23 years. My belief is that a student's math success lies in my ability to communicate concepts in a manner that work with the student's learning style, so the environment is conducive to the student's understanding, acquisition, retention, and transference of math concepts from the classroom to real world applications.
I take great pride in providing students with the skills, strategies and tools necessary to become independent and successful learners.

In graduate school, I was required to develop and implement classes in all core content areas for middle grades students. The intentionality in the curriculum development required me to focus on how students learn best. Throughout the years, I have taken the learnings and have applied and woven varying strategies and practices to help students simplify concepts and find meaning appropriate to their specific age groups and learning styles.

Teaching students to feel confident enough to take learning risks in math, while also helping them to learn and grow from their mistakes is how I help students develop and/or build their math confidence. My students have demonstrated their math understanding and acquisition through various assessment forms to include oral presentations, written responses, classroom assessments, projects, standardized tests and practical daily

As a middle grades teacher who has taught in several states, my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction (in all core content areas in grades 4-8) and specialization in upper elementary math to Pre-Algebra, have enabled me to see the unparalleled benefits of providing individualized support to students based on their specific learning styles. I have tutored students outside of school, before school, after school, and during lunch to provide them with the tailored support needed to see them thrive in their math learning. I have also had the pleasure to work with a variety of students, to include: those on IEPs, gifted students, English Language Learners/ELL and/or ESOL students, economically disadvantaged, or academically and/or behaviorally challenged students and what I have found is that when I give the students an opportunity to experience learning through self-discoveries, whether directed and/or undirected activities, they meet and usually exceed my expectations. Because I have a very hands on, interactive and inquiry based approach to teaching, I know that I can bring learning opportunities and experiences to homeschooled students that will further develop their abilities and boost their confidence. Lastly, as a Hispanic, I am very comfortable teaching and guiding students through Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 classes. I can simplify the lessons, so the learners feel confidence in their abilities to understand and apply the language.

Excellent Tutor

Brenda was very patient and knowledgeble in both Spanish and Math. I particularly liked the way she was able to identify with my son's learning preferences and break the subject matter up in a way that he could understand!
