Tracie does an excellent job of working with our daughter by mixing things up and keeping her interested in the lessons. It is nice to see our daughter learning her sounds and reading skills and wanting to show us what she has learned when she is done working with Tracie. She also goes above and beyond in providing helpful feedback so we can continue to work on things with her when she is gone.
Tracie really knows what she is doing! She is an excellent tutor. My son is extremely shy and that makes it hard for teachers to work with him, but Tracie had him excited about reading from day one. She knows that each child is different and she knows what tools she needs to use. I highly recommend Tracie as a tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor K-6 because I am an experienced, certified elementary teacher and reading specialist for grade K-12. I have a Type 3 and a Type 10 teaching certificate. I also earned my National Board Certification in 2011 in elementary literacy. I have been teaching in elementary schools as a classroom teacher or reading specialist since 2000. This is my fifth year as a a full-time 3rd-5th grade reading specialist at my current school. I have also spent most summers teaching 1st-3rd grade ELL summer school. I have also held multiple leadership roles while serving on Student Services Team, Learning Leadership Team, and ELL Leadership Team.
Currently, I work with many ESL and bilingual students to improve their English reading, writing and speaking skills. I use effective assessments and strategies to help students build their vocabulary, phonics, and comprehension skills. I help the students make meaning of their learning through reading and related activities. I have worked with students in grades K-5 during the school year and summer school.
I teach phonics on a daily basis through my current position as a reading specialist. I work directly with many below level readers and ELL students. Many of these students benefit from direct, explicit phonics instruction. I teach students phonics through different activities including word sorts, building words, reading poems, and applying phonics skills to decode unknown words in context.
I have a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from Illinois State University and a Type 3 Elementary Education Teacher Certificate, a Master's in Language and Literacy - Reading Specialist degree, a Type 10 Reading Specialist Certificate, and National Board Certification in Literacy.
I have experience with English Learners, students in special education, and readers that are behind grade level in grades K-5. I have experience with making connections between all ares of literacy to help students create meaning. I also have access to high quality assessment and instructional materials i use to provide targeted, best practice instruction.
