About Harvey

I have just returned from the Philippines where I was the Headmaster of an international K-12 school with 170 students. It fulfilled my life long dream to lead an international school with a strong academic and fine arts program. As you can tell by my photo I am highly experienced as a teacher, father, and grandfather. My hobbies include travelling most recently to Toronto, Canada, Beijing, China, and Manilla, Philippines) playing with out two dogs, Max and Buddy. My wife Linda and I spend a great deal of time attending the activities of our grandchildren.

While I have experience teaching all levels from K to university level, I really enjoy teaching beginning and intermediate music lessons, tutoring all subjects K-8 and ESL work with non English speaking students. I can teach in person and via SKYPE. I would love to work with you regardless of your age or ability.

Former elementary teacher, administrator, and international headmaster. I have created study skills programs, used numerous online and print materials for tutoring. Patient with a great sense of humor. I am an encourager. I have a Doctorate in educational leadership also.

I have 30 years of experience as a teacher, performer, actor, composer, and arts administrator. I studied at Cincinnati Conservatory and Indiana University School of Music. Have a degree in music education and one in performance from Bowling Green State University College of Music.

I am an outstanding ADD/ADHD tutor because I am an ADHD/ADD adult. I had to figure my way through it and around it. Now that they have labelled it and put processes in place to cope, I can help students come up with planning strategies that work for them and improve their performance. It was overwhelming before I was formally diagnosed in my late 30's.

I am an encourager of students and a problem solver. Even with subjects you may not enjoy, we will find a way together to see that your satisfaction increases, your stress decreases, and that you make the progress necessary. You can do it! Why do I know that? Because I did it!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a former special education supervisor and music educator. An ADD/ADHD adult, I have worked with students of all ages to deal with this as a gift and not as a disability.

Career Development

I operate my own career and college counseling business. I redesigned the college and career courses and program for Southeastern Illinois College. A former university director and community college professor, I have worked with high school, college and career transition individuals from age 16-60.

As Headmaster of Noblesse international School, Philippines, I implemented their first college and career program.

I also hold a doctorate in educational leadership.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught early childhood through 6th grade and tutored in all academic areas through 6th grade. I am a former middle school principal and have also served as the principal of a K-123 international school.

Piano

I have taught music for thirty years, piano for forty years, and taught K-12 music for 12 years. I hold an undergraduate and graduate degrees in music and operate my own private music studio.

Study Skills

I was in charge of special education and have taught study skills and organization skills to students from elementary to university levels. I completely re-designed the study skills program for Southwestern Illinois College.

Voice (Music)

I have studied and taught voice for thirty years. I have an undergraduate degree and graduate degree in music with voice and piano emphasis. In additional, I did post-graduate voice study at Indiana University with Walter Cassel. I taught K-12 vocal music in public school also.

Enthusiastic and flexible

He listens to find out what the student wants, without a pre-set curriculum. I played some and got his feedback, and he also demonstrated a couple of pieces which taught me more about technique than I could learn from struggling on my own. I really enjoyed his approach and I can tell already he's going to challenge me - while making me feel good about it.
