About JERRY

I am a 1973 graduate of Western Illinois University with a major in Political Science, as well as Education. My minor was in history, and my first two years I took multiple math classes.

I taught 7th and 8th grade Social Studies and reading at St. Mark's Grade School from August 1973 through June 1976. I then left to work in the construction industry as a carpenter, job superintendent, estimator and project manager.

In December 2010, I accepted a position to teach GED and construction through the City of Peoria Workforce Network. I obtained certification as an instructor for construction and as a master carpentry instructor through the National Center for Construction Education and Research. I taught Social Studies, Math, Science and English with a partner during my time at Workforce, as well as life skills, tutoring of individuals and general GED prep for the students. During my time at Workforce Network, I attended Bradley University, taking course in History and Education.

I am a current State of Illinois Certificate Teacher for 6 - 12 students and registerees through the Peoria Regional Superintendent's Office.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

GED

I am presently and have been teaching at risk young adults in GED classes for the last five years at YouthBuild Peoria. My specialties are Social Studies, Math and the US Constitution; I have also taught and tutored students over the last five years in Language Arts and Science. I am very familiar with the exams that are given at the Regional Office of Education. I have attended conferences on the requirements that students must meet to pass these exams. Finally, I am a State of Illinois certified Secondary Education Teacher.

Social Studies

I have been teaching social studies in a formal GED classroom setting for the past 5 years. I also teach and provide a certified constitution test for my students, that meet and are accepted by the ROE Office for their GED requirement. My Bachelor's degree is double major in secondary education and political science, with minors in history and math.
