About Brett

Hi, my name is Brett and I am a graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Chemistry. I received an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for excellence in my major. I have worked as a free-lance tutor for the past year for middle-school and high-school aged students, specializing in helping students in the sciences including Biology and Physics, as well as math at various levels up to calculus. I mainly focus on helping students build an in-depth knowledge of the material to excel beyond the challenges offered in the course. I also help teach and maintain time management, organizational skills and study habits to help students feel more comfortable with the approach they are taking towards their academic success. I am currently a student at Midwestern University in the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, with aspirations of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

I took math up to Calculus B/C in high school and received a "5" on the Calculus BC AP exam, the highest score offered. I also took four additional math and statistics courses in college.

In college, I took 3 years in chemistry, and got an "A" in a majority of the classes I took. I also took a year of Biology and Physics in college, receiving top scores in these classes.

I took the MCAT in the summer of 2015. My score report was as follows.

MCAT scores:
Physical Sciences: 14 99th percentile
Verbal Reasoning: 11 95th percentile
Biological Sciences: 10 76th percentile
Overall: 35 96th percentile

I took the MCAT twice. I took a prep course the first time I took it. I did not score well, and I do not feel that the course prepared me adequately for the test. However, what I did learn from the prep course was the strategies that worked, and those that did not in mastering the MCAT. Going through both the course and studying extensively on my own, I have a good grasp of what worked, and what did not. With my MCAT tutoring, I can teach you both the knowledge and test-taking skills needed to obtain your dream score.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you (or your child) become successful in one of the many classes that I offer help with. Please feel free to contact me at any time and I will get back to you ASAP.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have worked with middle school and high school students in algebra 1 in the past. I was able to help them boost their grades and increase their interest in learning math.

Algebra 2

I have tutored multiple students in the past on this subject and have been able to significantly improve their grades. I also took honors algebra 2 in high school and received an A both semesters.

Biology

I took honors biology in high school which did not teach to the AP curriculum, but through studying on my own I was able to pass the AP exam. Also, I took a year of Biology in college that included microbiology, genetics, and ecology. I also scored in the 80th percentile on the MCAT in the biology section, the admissions test for medical school. Also, I currently tutor a student in biology who went from receiving B's and C's to getting a 95% on their final exam.

Calculus

I took AP Calculus BC in high school and received an A both semesters as well as receiving a 5 on the AP test, the highest score you can receive. I also took 2 additional math courses while in college beyond calculus.

Chemistry

I took AP chemistry in high school and received an A in the course. I also received a 5 on the AP test, the highest score offered. In college, I took 3 years of chemistry. One year of general chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, and one year of biochemistry. I have also tutored multiple students in chemistry previously and have been able to boost all of their grades and confidence in their skills significantly.

Geometry

I took honors geometry in high school. I also received a score of 750 on the Math level 2 SAT II.

MCAT

I took the MCAT in the summer of 2015. My score report was as follows.

MCAT scores:
Physical Sciences: 14 99th percentile
Verbal Reasoning: 11 95th percentile
Biological Sciences: 10 76th percentile
Overall: 35 96th percentile

However, what I did learn from the prep course was the strategies that worked, and those that did not in mastering the MCAT. Going through both the course and studying extensively on my own, I have a good grasp of what worked, and what did not. I feel confident that I would be able to pass those skills along to others.

Physics

I took AP physics in high school. I also took a year of college level physics, receiving an A all three quarters. I have previously helped a student with physics and was able to help them increase their grade significantly.

Precalculus

I took honors precalculus in high school, as well as AP calculus BC. I received a score of 5 on the AP exam,, the highest score offered. I also scored a 750 on the SAT II for math level 2.

Probability

I took two statistics courses while in college. One being an introductory course and the other being calculus based probability.
