Hello! I'm Dr. Ross. When I was young, I fell in love with nature and the outdoors, and greatly enjoyed sharing what I learned with my friends and family. Hello! I'm Dr. Ross. When I was young, I fell in love with nature and the outdoors, and greatly enjoyed sharing what I learned with my friends and family. Since then, I've been teaching science to people of all ages, beginning in high school, when I volunteered in the live animal and environmental education exhibit (called the "Outside-In") at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. I have trained the undergraduates in my Plant Science lab at the University of Delaware in lab techniques and the science behind how they function. I especially had fun teaching in our lab's annual Summer Science Camp for middle and high school students, where I helped run the morning lessons, then trained the students in microscopy, plant growth, and other common lab practices.

I am also quite fond of (and good at) writing and editing, and will be able to help edit student essays/papers for grammar, and when needed, the quality of the ideas/scientific theory discussed therein.

As described in my Bio, I have had experience teaching students of all ages in a variety of Biological subjects. My PhD was in Plant Biology, but my undergraduate training was in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and the concepts are mostly applicable across all organisms.

I will be happy to meet you and teach you, and perhaps learn some new things myself in the process. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Botany,

Botany

I worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Delaware for ten years, in a lab specializing in Plant Biology, specifically plant cell-to-cell communication. During this time I was also a Teaching Assistant for a class in Plant Hormone Signaling. I also trained our new graduate students and undergraduate lab assistants in lab protocols, and the scientific background they needed to understand to carry out the research. I obtained my PhD in Plant Biology in January 2018.
Genetics,

Genetics

A substantial part of my undergraduate education at Haverford College was in Cell Biology, and learning about Genetics was a major portion of this. Importantly, I applied this knowledge of Genetics for my tenure as a PhD Grad Student in Plant Biology, both for my Thesis project itself, as well as training undergraduates in our lab. During grad school, I needed to replicate and test genomic DNA, which involved designing primers; I also collected and sequenced DNA and RNA to look for mutations. I also used my knowledge of Genetics to design transgenic plants, which involved manipulating plasmid DNA, checking for restriction enzyme sites, etc.; I also had to understand how the homozygous/heterozygous mutant or transgenic background of adult plants might impact their phenotypes.
