Loyola University Chicago (Secondary Education)
I am currently a college student majoring in Secondary Education and Italian with a minor in English and a certification to teach students whose second language is English. I plan on becoming a teacher in Italian language. At my university, I am a volunteer writing tutor. Last year, I studied abroad in Rome for a semester. This experience allowed me to immerse myself in Italian language and culture. In both Italian and English, I am able to help with reading, writing, and speaking skills. I am extremely flexible with what needs to be addressed in tutoring sessions because I believe that each session should be tailored to students' needs and abilities. I've had experiences working with middle school and high schools students with a range of language abilities (in both English and Italian). I can promise that I will give my best in helping you succeed and achieve.
During my college experience, I've had the opportunity to work with a wide range of students. I've done clinical work in a middle school language arts classroom as well as a high school Italian class. Much of my clinical work involved creating engaging and and authentic lessons for students on a bi-weekly basis. This required me to know my students not only on an academic level, but on a personal level. Lessons need to be relevant and interesting to students in order for learning to take place. Along with working in these classrooms, I've had experience working with students whose second language is English. I did some tutoring while abroad in Rome teaching local Italians English, as well as English tutoring in the Chicago-land area. In my clinical work, many students who I worked with were immigrant students or spoke another language at home. I am able to adapt lessons and content to aid students who experience language difficulties. This idea is not only perfect for English language learners, but for all students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
