I have been an ESL volunteer tutor in the VITA (Volunteers for Teaching Adults) ESL Program at Oakton Community College in Skokie, Illinois for one year. I have completed a three half-day ESL training sponsored by Oakton Community College. I am a tutor at the Bridge to Academic Writing program, where we tutor students in writing, grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction, etc. Some students have a college degree in their country of origin and plan to pursue further studies here in the U.S. We use a textbook/workbook in the classroom. Every class, each student writes 1-2 pieces essay on a topic assigned. Tutors review the writing and make specific recommendations for the students to improve and enhance the writing. For example, the feedback could be related to word use, tense, verb-subject agreement, use of a topic sentence to start the paragraph, etc. While giving feedback to the student, we are verbally discussing with the student face-to-face and one-on-one. The tutors also work with students in small groups when working on a specific module in the textbook and facilitate the group discussion. In group discussions, we ensure that participation is balanced and the quieter students have a chance to talk and contribute. We also have available to students the use of dictionaries, thesaurus and other supplementary writing materials. The program is an Illinois state-funded ESL program. Because the program is state-funded, the program adheres to state-mandate guidelines and review. In related fields here at WyzAnt, I am currently certified in: English, grammar, public speaking, reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, ACT reading/writing, SAT reading/writing and business. These related fields are great areas that contribute to becoming a great ESL tutor. My principal hobby is writing and delivering public speeches for over 25 years. I currently mentor several new speakers and prospective members in public speaking; some are minorities for whom English is a second language. I have competed in speech contests for many years; I was an instructor for public speaking classes for 8 years. I also have corporate training and facilitation experience. I possess an extensive vocabulary and an immense love for elegant language/verbiage. I have an undergraduate business degree and a graduate degree in Human Resource Development, with emphasis on Instructional Design. This instructional design degree is helpful in teaching ESL, since both areas of study are involved in teaching/training adults in new mental and verbal skills. I am excited to be certified in ESL and related disciplines here at WyzAnt.
