I am a certified teacher in Illinois in English, Language Arts, Social Studies, Psychology, and German. I have taught students in all three levels and instructed in more than 40 college courses as an adjunct professor for 12 colleges. I have successful experience with many nationalities, social classes, inner-city and suburban students, and community programs for adults and immigrants of all ages.
I would love to equip and enable your child to achieve the success you both desire. I personally care for each learner and discern his or her learning style and assimilation preference and then tailor our sessions to 'fit' them. Since I found learning difficult, I am very adept at sensing what may be hindering success and am able to teach the learner skills to get past it now and in the future.
A great advantage to my tutees is their increased self confidence and self image which I have found essential for their continued academic success.
I have tutored for Club-Z, Huntington Learning Center in Park Ridge, Glenbrook High School district, private elementary, high school, and college students in Reading, Writing, English, Math, Algebra 1, Test Preparation, Social Studies, Spelling, German, Study Skills, and English as a Second Language. I also teach business English to international businessmen and ESL. I am a certified teacher in Illinois in English, Language Arts, Social Studies, Psychology, and German. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have successfully taught and tutored Algebra 1 to junior high, high school, and college students and am a certified teacher in Illinois though not in Math. One reason for my students' success is my discerning their learning and assimilation styles and equipping them to wisely use their uniqueness to improve academically in the short and long term. Another skill they learn is how to create a very clear beneficial notebook which includes everything they need to know from each chapter: terms, formulas, and sample problems that they understand for each formula. Then I have them teach me how to do each type of problem which really solidifies their knowledge and greatly increases their self-confidence.
I have earned a Masters of Divinity cum lauded from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and pastored two churches. I was a staff member with Campus Crusade for Christ in Delaware. I have taught many Bible studies and Sunday School classes and courses in World Religions at four universities with very positive student evaluations.
I have been successfully teaching English as a Second Language since 1989 to more than 50 nationalities. I have taught employees in many different types businesses, immigrants in community programs, college exchange students, and international business people in person and via telephone to Europe.
I have earned certification from the Rassias Method of Language Instruction and participated in many ESL Adult Education Service training seminars. I compiled an unpublished ESL text titled "Super Simple English." The content arose from the strategies that were successful in my wide variety of classroom experiences.
I have over 4000 documented hours of teaching ESL and have been listed in the Marquis Who's Who in American Education. I am a certified Type 09 teacher in Illinois for grades 6-12 in five subject areas including English and Language Arts. I have taught well on every education level.
I have taught and tutored junior high and high school students how to succeed in Prealgebra by enabling them to discover their unique learning and assimilation styles and equipping them to wisely use them in creating and learning from their simply designed notebook which will include the new terms, formulas, and their own sample problems for each concept in the chapters. This notebook is essential for success since every new math chapter requires mastery of the previous one, and one's well done notebook enables my students to easily review for homework and tests through out the semester.
I invest in developing their confidence in properly doing the sequence of procedures to be learned in Prealgebra since success in all future math courses is dependent on these basic processes.
All of my math tutees have commented on how simple math becomes as a result of my style of teaching them.
I received training to teach the Freshman Seminar: First Year Experience through the University of South Carolina. I also was trained to instruct students using "Becoming a Master Student" by its author Dave Ellis.
At my own expense, I traveled to Las Vegas where I earned certification in using Accelerated Learning techniques. One of the instructors was Thomas L. Madden, author of Fire-Up your Learning.
I was selected to create and teach the Freshman Seminar Study Skills course at East-West University in Chicago. Our student body consisted of under-served students who were "first in family" to attend college. My students increased the university's retention rate because my instruction better equipped and enabled them to achieve the academic success they desired.
I invest great effort in discerning each student's learning preference and assimilation style and tailor my tutoring to his or her uniqueness. As a result, their self image and self confidence improves which very positively impacts their academic progress. I have a website of student testimonies I will make available upon request.
