About Kayla

Bio

My name is Kayla and I am a cello performance senior at NIU. I have been playing cello for 12 years and it has always been a love of mine. Besides cello, I love reading, writing, playing video games, running, and watching TV and YouTube. I am one of the lucky people that can say they have many passions: music, English, and gaming are the three things that get me out of bed in the morning. Because of this, I strive and study to become the best I personally can at these things; this also drives me to help other people achieve this. Some fun facts about me: I love horses; my family used to breed golden retrievers; I also play in my university steelband (look up the steelpan, you won't be disappointed); and I love traveling and hiking.

My ability and drive to tutor successfully stems from my understanding of the mind of a frustrated student. I am patient, understanding, and will explain things in many different ways until you understand. My goal is not to work until time is up; my goal is to make you understand the concepts and be able to regurgitate the material for the test and long afterwards.

I am a cellist with a passion for music and helping my peers achieve their goals. I was chosen from my class to be the music theory and aural skills tutor for the 2015-2016 academic year, and in that time, I was able to hone my tutoring and teaching skills and review the smaller details of the subjects. I was in the ILMEA All-District Orchestra every year I auditioned (2010, 2011, and 2012), and I just gave my first college-level cello recital, featuring the Schumann cello concerto, Beethoven's third cello sonata, and his first string trio.

I am also on track for and English minor, though I don't think I will finish it due to the 18 credit hour limit. I won an essay contest my senior year of high school, and have always marked at the top of my English classes; I plan on adding English to my tutoring repertoire.

I love meeting new people, so don't hesitate to let me know if you think we'd be a good fit! I am patient and completely free over the summer, so I can work with the weirdest of schedules (within reason). I look forward to speaking with you!

Cello,

Cello

I have been playing cello for 12 years and have been taking lessons the whole time. I made it into the Illinois Music Educator's Association All-District Orchestra all three years that I auditioned (2010, 2011, 2012). I am currently at university pursuing my Bachelor's in Music Performance, studying with the Avalon Quartet and their cellist, Cheng-Hou Lee, a graduate of Rice University and Juilliard. I have a year of experience teaching lessons on the cello, and even more experience tutoring students in all sorts of subjects.
General Music,

General Music

I have been playing cello for 12 years, and am currently at university pursuing my Bachelor's in Music Performance. I am used to teaching beginners about music, and I am very patient and able to explain clearly and without jargon. I am great with kids as well as adults, and I absolutely love sharing music with people who don't know it very much.
Sight Singing,

Sight Singing

I have been in choirs since 2005, and was ranked #1 in aural skills in college both years, as well as exceeding rankings from years before. I tutored aural skills (which sight-singing is a large part of) for a year, and helped students get better at sight singing and aural skills in general. I am very patient and I have many different ways of helping the student learn to sight sing, such as sub-vocalizing and solfege proficiency.
